Mehboob Studio, April 24, 2008 4:55 pm
The year before last year, i think, i was invited to a function by lyric writer Sameer, the son of the illustrious lyric writer Anjaan. The function was the launch of a book on his completion of a certain number of years in the film Industry. In his welcome speech he expressed joy that his father had written songs for Amitabh Bachchan ( khaike paan benaras wala.. was his ! ), he, Sameer, had written songs for Amitabh’s son Abhishek and he now wished that his son ( who he presented on stage - a mere few months old !) would hopefully write songs for Abhishek’s son ( Abhishek was not married till then ).
When asked to speak, I applauded and acknowledged the long standing connection between our families and concluded jokingly that i must now rush home and ask Abhishek to quickly produce a son so that - in Hindi - Sammer ji ki mano kaamna puri ho jai ! ( Sameer ji’s wishes should come true ).
The electronic media without reference to the moment in its entirety, edited the proceedings and put out a headline - ‘Amitabh Bachchan wants a grand son !’. And a socially conscious organization, non government, sent me a legal notice on the grounds that i was publicly propagating the desire for a male child, thereby demeaning the presence of the girl child in society and undermining its birth.
So..electronic media mischieviously mutilated a piece of news and projected it putting me into trouble, for creating a wrong impression in society.
I just have a point. The Financial Express of Mumbai dated Thursday, April 24, 2008 carries a headline in its ‘fe360′ section on page 14, titled “Skipping breakfast may mean a baby girl”, where the article talks of a research done on the diet of women at time of conception - ‘ low calorie diet or skipping breakfast, at time of conception more likely to give birth to girls than boys’.
Will not the publishing of such an article give ideas to those who may not want a girl child !!
Any socially conscious organizations listening !!
Amitabh Bachchan

Hope they are listening. You know yourself that media houses are almost supposed to do such “”sensational”" stuff. For NGO’s to give such a knee jerk reaction seems incredulous, a new low.

Dear Mr Bachchan,
Newspapers and magazines sell for these headlines. Invariably the comments are twisted or deliberately mis-interpreted to make sensational headlines. I think being under the media spotlight for so long (for that matter all your family members), you should not worry about all these things. That said, even the public at large has become aware of these media tactics and takes all such quips with a pinch of salt. (FYI, as I write there is a hale storm outside here in Surrey, UK). Anyways, your fans’ best wishes and god’s blessings are with you, please continue to keep entertaining us and not worry about these ridiculous people. And please avoid films like Ramu Ki Aag etc.
Kind regards,
Shailendra

Respected Amitabhji,
Inspired by this profound literature, a painting has emerged through my hands which also reflect on some of your significant contribution to the holistic development of mankind- integrating these two different but very closely related unfathomable subjects. I am waiting for the day when I would get an opportunity to present it to you….
I have been trying hard to contact you since last so many years, wrote several emails and spoke to Rosy Singh many times. But…
Since my childhood, I have been always taking inspiration from your roles and your social work. Since then, I have been trying to address to social issues through my paintings. Like you, I also wish to contribute something to the development of our country and I have chosen a sector – Urban Development.
I work as an Architect and Urban Designer with UK’s top organisation and we specialize in creating ’sustainable, eco friendly human settlements’ those create very minimal impact on our planet. I greatly appreciate your efforts taken in ‘Climate Change Campaign’ and would be very happy to contribute in that and share some of my international knowledge / experience with you that I have gained till date. Thoughtlessly created manmade built environments contribute significantly in Global Warming. As India is urbanizing very rapidly and poised for major transformations, it’s a need of an hour to ’shape’ our country’s growth to create sustainable, cohesive and balanced communities.
While working on world’s one of the most advanced cities, London, I closely study and work on Environmental and Urban Design Policies those are designed and implemented to create world’s best ‘climate responsive human settlements’ integrating with local resources and ecology. I am very keen to contribute in India’s holistic socio economic and urban development and I have already started created awareness in Indian society by writing in National, regional and local media/ publications. In the near future I would like to come back and start my own Urban Design practice in Mumbai.
India is poised…
My father has been working for the development of polio affected people by teaching Art to them. Even though he has polio to his left leg, he is successful and renowned Artist in Maharashtra. Also would like to share his work with you…
I am waiting for that day when I would meet you….
Kind regards

And about what you have written here is 100% correct (these Media organizations and journalists are only after money) ,they will do anything to increase their TRP ratings and also to increase their revenue.
Of late electronic media is leaving out important things like farmer suicides in Maharashtra , Tibet etc., and concentrating only on gossips. They do n’t care about intruding into private lives of celebrity people,it ’s hightime there should be a Electronic Media Regulator just like TRAI to control these money crazy elements who will stopp to any level.

Dear Amitji,
This is fantastic answer and should silence all critics (publicist critics). I wonder how media image is going down day by day. Media has been used badly (or media is projecting themself badly) mainly as publicity by any person. Any person can talk or dump something on any icon (public person), immediately they will get (I think media will provide without thinking the originality of the content) publicity without sending paise. Most of the media as become very cheap and irresponsible. Media people, please wokeup and see other problems in the country.

On the other hand the preference for male child in India (and in most Asian countries) is too ingrained to be controlled by censorship. Carrots will be more productive than sticks.

This is a one of the moot point on which a debate can be held and still we ‘ll left with someone following the trend to avoid girls baby. The publishing of article is really questionable? But in modern time ,in which we r living is very fast and the people are in hurry to do anything that ‘ll benifit them. Not thinking about the consequence. Dear Amitji,
Have been intently reading and responding to your thoughts each day. The media is a self created demon which needs to ‘create’ news each day to ensure its survival. So no surprise here that every little mosquito that bites makes news! And if they can’t capture that, it means distorting facts.
Somehow we need to leash in the media. I am not sure the way you are doing is the right way. Because your musings on the blog are again distorted and make more fodder and fuel for consumption of the voyeuristic audiences.
What I would like to know is that when years ago you had a self imposed ban on speaking to Stardust and the likes, did it affect them? Did it produce the effect you wanted? Today when you speak it makes news, when you don’t it makes news. What is the way out? I am sure there must be sensible people in the media too— why are they silent when their voices need to be heard. Sometimes I am glad that I didn’t become a journalist that I wanted to… I would never have fitted in.

Hello Amitabh Ji,
Iam Swarnika from chennai and have been your ardent fan ever since I remember. I remember when I was just 4 - 5 years old i used to ask the barber to cut my hair in Amitabh style ( being a i girl i was laughed at by the barber).
Thanks for writing on a issue which is main concern in todays so called educated society. A girl child is looked down upon and I being a girl could never understand why? I believe girl is a boon to any family because she is the one who gives her father strenght to work hard for her future and binds the family in an everlasting bond. She is the one who loves and takes care of her parents when they grow old because she has a heart which is filled with love and only love.
Todays woman is at par with men in any field of career.
Even todays educated families have this male female discrimination. People pray godess Lakshmi, Parvati ,Saraswati etc who i think they forget are females. People go all the way to Haridwar and take holy dip in Ganges but why do then why when a famale child is born in their family she is killed?
During her marraige she is accepted only when her father gives dowry to grooms family why???? In many families i have seen that a husband loves his mother who is also a female and when a female child is born to him she is detested.
Education is actually not doing anything good in this particular issue. Highly educated families pratice these discriminations.
The only thing we can do is pary for the girls to god ” where their mind is without fear, where their head is held high, where they are respected, where they are worshipped, into that heaven my father let my country awake.

Very well said…I read that article on diet of a mother on ibnlive.com today morning and was wondering on the kind of research going on nowadays…
surely, publishing such articles may lead to giving ideas to some who mayn’t wan’t a girl child…but worse…what if some wannabe mothers deliberately skip their meals for want of a girl child (potentially harming their own and the childs health), based on some published research findings that may be refuted some time in the future (much like the debate on usage of cellphones & cancer!)…one can’t help but wonder…how responsible is it to publish such articles?
On a different note…really looking forward to Sarkar Raj

Sir,
I have a daughter aged 7 and a son aged about 3. During the 2nd pregnancy, many friends & relatives enquired if we had got tested for the gender of the child or not !! We were apalled that educated and so-called forward thinking desi’s should think like that !! We told them that in fact a famous astrologer had told us after the birth of our daughter that the 2nd child will also be a girl and we have not bothered about that as all we wanted is another child to be a companion for our child !
As to the media, they just want some juice to survive. What would they do if Mr Amitabh Bachchan just stopped talking to the media ? At times they are crazy and I guess the worst thing to happen is for the concept of “Breaking News” to be developed by the TV news channels.. I get angry rather than laugh at the stupid news flash that they put on air..
Sir, you are right in your observation that since we talk about gender equality, an article like the one “Skipping breakfast…” ought to have been taken up by the so-called activists and of course the Media !!
But sadly they haven’t and will not as that news doesnt sell and certainly is not newsworthy ..
This i my first blog and the fact that is Mr AB’s blog, I was carefull in not using slangs and short form of words (the SMS/Chat lingo, as they call it !).. I did not want to tart my blogging life with a rebuke for a man i repect a lot !!
Keep it going Mr Bachchan !

Hello sir,
Thats what I meant when i replied to last blog, in which Shotgun had aimlessly shot at u, regarding the IIFA awards.
Since the media has become so big, I think they need something to publish, something catchy and thats where they come up with all such briliant (brainless) ideas.
However I would still like to know, how do u handle all these crap things written abt u???
It will help youngsters like me, on learning how not to get detracted by baseless allegations.
Do you loose it at some point? I am sure it must frustrate u?
But then what is the way to tackle all these things?
I am sure The financial Express of India is not as big a brand as Amitabh is , so perhaps they may get away with few things, which u (may be coz of u r iconic status) may be not allowed even if u havent meant it in that sense.(which I feel is wrong)

Dear Mr Bachchan,
As you are already aware, being a celebrity has both pros and cons. Being a non-celebrity, all that I do is to simply ignore some media reports like this.
“TOP?” Channels, like “Aaj Tak” and “Star Hindi News” in particular show “gossip” and no news. I guess that is how they survive.
Even a staged event like the WWE in which our Khali is taking part is shown like a movie with titles like “Khali ko BIG show ka Dhoka” etc.
So, I say, simply ignore it!!
You dont need to speak. Your majestic silhouette shadows over it all!!
Thanks,

Sir,
I know you meant this blog entry entirely serious, but still it made me laugh for two reasons.
1: Most representatives of socially conscious NGOs I met during 15 years of reporting about their work (their importance for this planet nonewithstanding) bite every possible bone of contention like a bulldog, and they don’t have any sense of humour. This is a wonderful case in point.
2: When I read about that British study about mother’s diets and babies’ genders, I also thought of countries like India, where male children often are preferred. Now I wonder if I’ll see lots of overweight young women on my next visit to India…
BTW: Loved the interviews and was surprised at the interviewers - what kind of ‘journalists’ gets jobs in India? Too much bad research and too many mindless questions. To me it looks as if they don’t want conversation, but confirmation. No wonder some interviews have paragraph-long questions and monosyllabic answers…
Best regards,
Elisabeth

These so called socially conscious organizations target celebrities so that they manage to get the desired mileage for themselves and their outfit. To abuse and accuse the Bachchans is the easiest way to find yourself splashed all over town. And all those who have been hibernating or vegetating all along suddenly find the focus on themselves by attacking you or your family. But these rats dare not take on the media or else they would be doomed. After all isn’t the media always craving and then living on misquotations and allegations.
It is nice that you have started counter attacking all those who question your right to live peacefully. But sir, please be assured that the millions who love you would continue doing so irrespective of all the mudslinging carried on by your detractors. and even if you do not retaliate, you still tower over all these shady characters.

Best Wishes,
Namraj Joshi

Dear Mr. Bachchan
I remember the episode. Media has reached a new low. Most of the breaking news issues displayed are ridiculous to say the least. What is more a cause for concern is; reputed news channels (English channels too!) have resorted to sensationalism.
I am hopeful, eventually when the viewers get tired of watching ridiculous, repetitive, senseless information, Indian news channels will eventually start maintaining decent standards.
Currently, it appears there is no escape. News is now entertainment, gossip, information all rolled in to one!!!

Hi,
your take on some sections of the Media is absolutely right.
I sometimes feel that now a days They don’t have editors anymore, or how else does one explain such irresponsible Rubbish 24 hrs a day all around the channels!!
when I watch read newspapers I dawn the hat of a editor myself and decide what level of priority to give to which news, BECAUSE news on ‘Vital Statistics’ of some Model finds place just beside news on ‘Malnutrition Death Statistics” in our country.
Same applies to news Channels also.
Nice to see you Blogging Sir.

Dear Amitabh,
You should not be concerned about such articles. Media personnel are trained to ‘read between the lines’ though there are no lines. What’s wrong in wanting a boy child, it’s your wish. Anybody can wish to have a girl or boy child or no child at all. This NGO may not be doing its job, finding ways get into news.
On a different note, I think you need to get into “entertainment business” BIG time. You already have experience on ‘how not to repeat earlier mistakes’. You need to creat a team which is more credible, committed than capable. Because often, dedication, integrity, committment more than compensate for capability.
Anil Ambani is the most successful businessman and your friend. Reliance Entertainment is big time into entertainment industry, they have backend integration - movie processing, etc. through adlabs and front end integration through multiplexes, digital streaming, etc. - but do not yet got into ‘movie making’. You may want to take care of this. After all, creating magic in movies is your forte and extending that magic to making movies is worthwhile.
All The Best.

Amitabh Ji,
Just as a picture is produced through its negative/blue print, similarly, one’s world is produced by ONESELF through one’s negative, which in other words is called one’s mind.
Then, both the negative and the positive play the complementary roles to each other - in what one may say ‘creative, corresponding’ dialogue.
When complete correspondence between both is produced one has achieved one’s evolutionary highest goal, of experiencing the One.
So, bear in mind that whosoever criticises you, puts you in any other form of inconvenience is your own choice to help you move ahead on your evolutionary journey.
This much this time.

Why does it matter if someone wants a boy or a girl child? It is a matter of individual choice. And then again where is the choice, you get what God chooses to give you and when a child is born, irrespective of whether it is a girl or a boy, that is the most beautiful gift God has given us. I still don’t know whay this big debate. I have a boy and I want a girl as my second child. If someone has a girl they want a boy as a second child to complete the family.

Sarkarji,
In India we have something called “FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS” and one of them is the FREEDOM OF SPEECH and EXPRESSION. People (read media.. ) has misused this right to some extent. I dont see any reason if as a Grandfather you seek to have a grandson is a crime. Its a just that the Big B has said something and the media creates a hue n cry. If i were say the same thing will the same media bother….
I pray to GOD that He gives u enough days to see your “GRANDSON” become a star. That way i will also get to see more of you…

Coming to the article about girl child, i personally think that it is huge shame about the treatment of girls in india. In most of the country, it is not possible for girls to venture out without attracting some sort of attention and the social discrimination they face is a sad fact. But i do think that with people like you raising the issue and the increased awareness, especially among the literate classes, we shall one day achieve a social balance where sex of a person is of no importance.
In any case, you can be rest assured that no matter what the magazines and papers say, you shall always have your fan base.

They were after you over ABHI-ASH wedding. why can’t they be happy seeing a SUPERSTAR happy who in 4 decades spread HAPPINESS. why they want to go into his private life if he doesnot want them to be involved. Pls. spare our superstar - we have only one. this is my humble request.
I plead to media with folded hands help to fight the menace of DISCRIMINATION in this country and encourage a personality like AMITABH BACHHAN Who isymbolises INDIANESS in all its glory and help this country to remain UNITED.

Hi Amit ji. Its strange but true that 98% Indians are people, struggling to make ends meet, reach office on time, pay bills, have cordial relationships with wife, children and neighbours. They are frustrated to the core. And thats not without reasons. Look at daily traffic, electricity, water, housing, clothes, jobs issues. We live in very poor conditions. The frustration has to vent out. And here we have people who are looking to USPs for themselves and like one you mentioned who sent you legal notice. There are several like that, who are so UNHAPPY with OTHERS HAPPINESS.
Hope some day the politicians who run this conutry would have made enough money thru corruption and would then focus on counrty’s development. But looks like their greed is a hole bigger than Hell.

About what is perceived as truth
What is fed to us as truth
What people think or say
Against us!!!!!
The media needs to accept their responponsibilty of not tinkering and polluting our minds with baseless and imaginative articles!!

A point has come that we as a family have gone back to viewing DD News since it is the only real news channel now, others have gone from bad to worse. I can relate to your misgivings both as a celebrity and as a fellow human with a certain intellectual demands. Maybe its time for your ABC Corp to launch a real news channel which matches the standards set by the BBC and the CNN of the world. My management studies say that demand fuels supply and if this is what media supplies then god bless those who demand it. Dont worry Amitji, this kind of situations arise in India, actually the Indian media is so immature except a few guys. Their immaturity is displayed by people working in Star News and Aaj Tak, these two channels are epitome of useless media practices. They need situations like these, so that they can exploit them to the fullest and garner all those useless TRP ratings. They fail to understand that the kind of news, which are always manipulated, they broadcast can really hurt someone to the core. As sane individuals we can just ignore them, like we ignore monkeys troubling us when we go to some temple.

This is how today media projects reality and reelty of its own!
to make up stories, or just twist them in such a manner, that its hard to understand whats true and whats not.
Its not that I’m totally blaming the media, because our demand towards what can be called ‘news’ is also one of the factors responsible!
But to manipulate truth, simply to sell and make money is wrong!

Hannah Arendt called modern democracy the great triumph of the ‘lie’. Politics, the media, the advertising world (assuming that the latter two do not just merge into each other beyond a point or that the same does not happen with the first two!) in very different way attest to the ‘truth’ of Arendt’s observation. In many ways the ‘lie’ is is the structural principle of all three (hence your ‘failure’ in politics, the ‘history’ of your discomfort with the media, your relative lack of ’savviness’ in terms of advertising yourself, all three probably give you a rather clean chit of character in this matter!).
For the ancient Greeks, the ‘false’ wasn’t just what we would think of as the opposite of the ‘truth’. For them the ‘truth’ used in a way to ‘deceive’ would also have been considered the ‘false’. A statement could be literally true as it stands but used to frame a larger ‘lie’. Following this logic there is always a ‘lie’ lurking at the heart of every truth. At the very least the truth can always be perverted to produce the very opposite effect.
Politics, advertising, the media, all three in modern democracies are in the business of manufacturing the ‘lie’ any given day not only by engaging in narratives that are manifestly untrue but in far more toxic fashion by mangling or mischievous selection to produce ’stories’ that deceive precisely because these might be ‘true’ in some sense.
This is the sort of thing you’ve been referring to. Because you’ve been such an extraordinary and really unparalleled force in Bombay cinema, because you’ve been such a stunning cultural presence for so many decades, because you continue to be ‘relevant’ by every definition of this term, the media rewards you by treating you to its choicest set of ‘lies’! There is surely something rather dismaying in this kind of targeting. One understands all the ideological dimensions of this ‘targeting’ and yet even after one has analyzed all the reasons and so forth one is still a bit stumped as to the intense negativity directed at you (either directly or by way of ‘attacking’ everyone surrounding you from Abhishek to Amar Singh, or even a director like Ram Gopal Varma who is now seen as too attached to you) or the extent to which the media is always hunting for a new excuse with which to frame a new ‘lie’ around the name ‘Bachchan’.
In this regard it is a superb and pragmatic decision on your part to begin your blog. Because such issues on a daily basis could hardly be addressed in the regular media channels, print or otherwise. The blog allows you to publish unedited interviews that have not been distorted by the media to produce provocative copy or to respond to something in the media or elsewhere in the most direct sense. In general it allows you to get out your side of the story (in a rather hilarious irony the media is now fulminating against even the fact that you began a blog! They attack you for daring to write what you wish on your very own blog!) instantly. I think it empowers you greatly but also empowers those like myself who have forever been among your greatest ‘followers’ but who might have been disappointed by your seeming inability to be more assertive in answering your detractors. I should say in this regard that all your recent interviews have satisfied me precisely for this very reason. You have consistently been forceful in your responses and this was certainly needed.
I should end here with a final thought. Much as I’ve always been disgusted by the ways in which the Bombay film media has operated I have been equally revolted by the absence of film industry voices when it comes to supporting you in moments of relative crisis. I notice that many have emerged to ‘denounce’ Anurag Basu (I myself was quite offended by his statements though he now claims he was ‘misquoted’) but no one bothered to come out (with very rare exceptions) when the Thackerays were doing far worse recently! Understandably the stakes are higher when one speaks up against a Thackeray as opposed to Anurag Basu but if public figures who are relatively shielded by their stature in society cannot take such ‘risks’, cannot feel a greater sense of responsibility in this regard who else can? I think that with greater ‘power’ there is greater ‘responsibility’. Of course not everyone who did not ‘defend’ you when the recent political fallout occurred were ‘afraid’. Many simply chose not to. One might argue that by the same token public figures, even if not politicians, ought to be addressing other kinds of issues rather regularly. I am sympathetic to such an idea. But it seems to me that in this instance the ‘obligation’ on the part of the industry was a bit greater as these are people who know you, who’ve interacted with you, who are ‘friends’, who in instances even ‘owe’ you in some fashion or the other. Yet there was no real support offered in any meaningful measure.

Moreover, the media is very efficient in targeting a person, even the general public, without knowing(or should I say, pretending to not know) the whole truth.
So, the ‘person’ gets defamed very easily, but when the innocence of the same person is proved, it doesn’t even reveal it properly! Sad to say, that person is another target of there selfish work..
Just another person, for a news.

Sir with lots and lots of respect —— Yes I remember this whole episode and later on in one of the interview you explaining this whole thing. India’s media is getting worst than here (North America so to speak). It is strange that skipping breakfast news was also in one of the leading news paper “Vancouver Sun†here in Vancouver Canada yesterday and I remember discussing this with my wife yesterday morning.
Sir, nothing about your injury, how come? How are you doing? I can’t even say if you are at the studio, you must be well because you are known to push yourself even in pain as you have been doing it this time and have done it before many times.
Take care Sir and please do write about your injury and health in general.
With lots and lots of respect this is Deepak from Vancouver ( Canada)

Dear Mr. Amitabh Bachchan,
I am simply overwhelmed by the fact that you have become accessible through this blog.
I am touched by your humility and acknowledgement of the hand of providence in what ever you have achieved by hardwork and brilliance.
When uncharitable comments disturb you, pray this line taken from a religious text: Give me a heart that doesn’t take offence.
Warm regards!

Dear Amitji,
It is no secret that you have been favourate whipping boy of politicians, sometime media as well for obvious reason of getting instant publicity and guranteed eye balls. However, I was shocked to hear Mr. Anurag Basu’s take on you today who belongs to your fraternity. I wonder how one hit film can give courage to people to engage is such loose and immature talk.
We all love to see you on screen and hence keep going till your body allows……
One thing I wish to know from you. There are reports that Ramu is planning to re-remake Sholay once again. Will you be part of the project, if offered?. I wish your answer is negative.
Warm Regards
Arun
