In the middle of wind swept dry terrain, bearded and wigged with glue, Shaheen of MidDay sms’s me with a whole line of questions and wants instant response. They always do, because their page is always on closing !

‘You are being paid to blog on Bigadda’

Really now ! This is my personal blog, why would I take money to blog on my own site ! I get paid to work in Movies, TV shows, commercials, not to express my personal views to the public, that too on my own platform.

‘Bigadda is an Anil Ambani group venture, hence the added interest’

My personal relationship with Mr Ambani has got nothing to do with this. Bigadda is a medium for my blog. They are the service provider ; my own technical knowledge being low. I am not the Brand Ambassador for Bigadda, I am merely using their services till my own website comes up.

‘Will you set your own blogging site like other stars’

I have just started blogging and enjoying the medium. My complete website is presently under construction by Zapak.com and shall soon be presented to the world. Till then I shall continue blogging through Bigadda.

‘Will you be launching your own website and what will it be called’

Work is in progress on my site and it should be ready in a few weeks time. Once that happens, I shall blog from my site. A fine team of people are working on the site and I am happy with the progress.

‘How long is your contract with Bigadda’

Zapak and Bigadda are service providers and I am happy with the way they have been handling my blog and in the building of my website. More than a contract it is the relationship that counts, which I hope should last a lifetime !

Now, why would Mid Day be interested in all this ? Do I sense a feeling of insecurity !!??

There are some blatant errors made by other media, which need clarification to set records straight -

    Dear AB sir,

I don’t remember how and when did u became my favorite actor. All i can recall when i grew up to an age where i cant understand movie and film things a bit… i liked you and looked up to you as some super creature.

I m very happy… that you always proved that you are my super hero… by all the mean a man can go through… a nice son, a loving husband, a cool daddy… and such a wonderful human being.

I am 29 yr old now and work as faculty member for an IAS coaching in Delhi… and i remember when i was asked about my ideal personality in an interview for faculty job… i was honest and told Amitabh Bachchan… I could easily see few lines on interviewer’s forehead…. i was out of place by saying this.

I got back to him.. and told.. i admire him not because he has larger than life image in reel and real life… but its his consistency, politeness, dedication, strength and ability to resurface after a bad pahse is commendable. In deed you are one of the greatest actor ever of the universe. But more than that.. you are a greatest human being!

Loads of love and best regards..

    Dear Mr. Bachchan,

My name is Anubhav Srivastava and I am a university student. I have been an avid follower of your blog since its inception. I really like your articulate responses to the various situations concerning you. I also admire the fact that despite being a so busy, you have committed yourself to updating the blog every single day.

Since this blog provides me the opportunity to get in touch with you, I would like to mention that I am currently in the process of making a documentary that seeks to investigate the mentality of winners. For this, I intend to interview several successful and influential people all over India. I am trying to gain insight into the thought process of achievers as the information would be of immense value to everyone trying to replicate the success achieved by their role models. I have already conducted interviews with Dr. Kiran Bedi and Mr. Deepak Puri, the chairman of Moser Baer.

I would request you to consider granting me an interview as the average person would be tremendously influenced by your success story. Your words would demonstrate that success is achievable by anyone if they believe in themselves. The interview would instill hope and determination into young people who aspire to achieve something in life.

I request you to kindly give me a chance to prove that the documentary has the potential to make a significant impact. I would able to do this by sending you a DVD containing excerpts of the interviews already conducted. The footage won’t be longer than 5 minutes so it wouldn’t consume much of your precious time. I am confident that after viewing the footage you would definitely consider taking some time out of your hectic schedule to grant an interview.

Many a times some newspapers/magazines include crap. This is not to deny their important role as an institution, but there are instances where just childish writing and sensation is visible. The section on films and personalities do also sometimes contain all subjective and immature commentary- unwarranted personal information and that also all rumors.

Obviously people want that kind of sensation, so gets printed and further fueled by mass media effects.

I am not sure why it is important to argue with such immature writers, who may not be probably understanding meaning of words they are using in legal/social context.

There is famous Dilbert principle which says that - do not argue with idiots, since they get you down to their level and then they defeat you.

Being a professional in the software industry, if I mis-represent any information in my job, I would immediately be out of one. I have to always give my claims with proof associated and I am surprised at how easily people can make remarks in the news media and just get away with it.

Sir i realized something that KBC’s gift for you was not the money but the importance of getting connected to the roots of our country and countrymen. From a teacher to a small business man, from a student to a professional, from a doctor to a lawyer what you felt was the joy in their eye, the respect in their gesture for you and not the money they were to win. Wasn’t that the best feeling? You are indeed much more than money to all of us. This feeling cant be bought by any amount of money. No FORBES list can ever calculate something that worth. Simply priceless.

Your killer instinct is showing and you have made the media open their eyes and start reading your blogs. What an IDEA!!

Reading about your website under development gives me goose bumbs.
Your blog is here to stay!! I am excited and impatient.

Your mention of Illustrated weekly and StarDust is very appropriate since at that time these were the top weekly and monthly magazines.

They did influence our young minds at that time.

I run a printing press myself since 1980 and I know proof reading was always a mammoth task. Dates and names and typographical errors, human errors.

Your eagle’s eye intelligence has caught up with that, and for me it means had you not been an ACTOR (IF) publishing would have been the alternative.

It amuses us SirG, people (editors) you just mentioned know you since more than 30 years yet they couldn’t assess your intelligence and memory, and how you managed to blind them with your STARDOM.

Some people call it a due for ur mistakes, but sir can a father make a child suffer severly even if he had commietd biggest mistake? and further if a leaf cant move without the order of GOD, how can anyone commit mistake w/o his order?? Lot of people on earth feel insecure when good and able people come together. I guess such is the case about your friendship with Mr Ambani and Mr. Amar Singh.
My only suggestion is don’t ever give any head to people who keep commenting about their involvement in your life. At the end of the day the people who stand for you are the people who matters.

    Respected Sir

For you me you are “THE acting school”. I cannot describe my feelings for you and the impact you have had on my life. In a population of a billion that adores you if you read this comment of mine , I would consider it as my biggest day in my life. Meeting you one day , remains and will remain my biggest dream of this life.

I personally feel , you have had so many challenges in life on many fronts but you never lost your dignity. “The alphabets for the world start with A , B , C but yours starts with C H A R I S M A …. apki duniya alag hain .. you are .. you are …… different .. and be proud that …huh uh .. that you are different !!” ….Black remains my fav film .. every scene of yours gives me goosebumps .. have seen it 25 times.

Agneepath , is a film that taught me “attitude” … It remains a classic and I have seen that 40 times.

I still cry when I see a dialogue , before you sing O Saathi Re .. ” Main koi Neta , Abhineta , Leader Nahi” …

Cannot wait for THE LAST LEAR … Sir , I am the biggest fan of yours.
I also like Al Pacino .. and do not have idea if you have met him personally Sir. It would be a great meeting , If you both work together it will be the biggest film of the century. I am sure you have seen his work in Godfather , Scarface , Dog Day Afternoon (1975) and Scent of a Woman.

Sir , I have always believed what you said , Bollywood ( I know you do not like this word ) .. work differently than Hollywood and its wrong to say it needs to learn anything from Hollywood. I only wish Hollywood sees more of your work and the day it happens , they will know what they have missed for years ! .. We are glad you are a part of us ..

In this glamour world , people tend to forget that you are a human being and give you crap so easily , criticize so easily. They tend to forget all the moments of joy you have given them through your acting .. Sir , I wish you and your family best of health and wealth. Please take of care of your health.

I will always love you as I have , and keep celebrating Oct 11 th as my own birthday ( I always give party to my friends on your birthday ) ..

I wish someday we can meet for a moment atleast.. and that will be the moment I will cherish for lives to come ..

    Always , Yours

    - Sachin

At the onset wanted to say that this whole experience for the last few weeks getting to read your thoughts on so many things has been very interesting and refreshing. Credit goes to you for doing this with the sincerity that you have. I also wonder how you feel about sharing so much of your life like this.

My wife who is a big fan prefers not to read your blog as she thinks the element of mystery to your persona will be lost, which she rather keep.

If you are enjoying this experience , I do think you should keep writing.

I did want to ask you about your association with Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar Saab. As many films as you have done with Hrishikesh Mukherjee (for me probably your best work) you haven’t been directed by Gulzar Saab ever. Did that just didn’t happen. It will be something waiting all these years for.

To finish, want to say thanks for the memories….and keep blogging.

    hi;
    very happy to know about yr blog;
it ws high time u did something to shut down the barking dogs of the film industry;media & political arena; just today i read a statement by”mr.anurag basu”;that says that ”mr.amitabh bachchan should just retire” now more than th feelings of anger and hurt i laughed loudly at this man;s audacity, that what he should be telling the likes of mr. dev anand,,mr.dharamendra and family, mr.vinod khanna and family etc. etc. he can shamelessly copy an entire ‘hollywood” movie bt dosnt bother to look at all the hollywood greats like;robert d nero; dustin hoffman; sean connery who though past their prime & not at all looking like their best or getting the same kind of powerfull central roles which they got in their landmark movies back in 80’s still continue to act ;just like you for you guys were born to act till the time you can just like the late actiing legends ;Ashok kumar & Marlon brando who acted till they breathed .nobody could point fingers at them. Sir, somehow i get the feeling that this hole hate wave has been precipitated post the Abhi-Ash marriage;every two bit actor; stand up comic or wannabe journos have made fun on your expense; The respect & awe which you rightfully deserved and got from the film fraternity somehow now looks forced and deliberate .

I sometimes wonder at the sheer ignorance of some of these so called T.V.channel critics and F.M. channel critics who dont even know the A.B.C. of your long history of films from 1970;s onwards; that what rights they have to comment below the belt remarks on you .To remind all of these guys of the time back in 80;s that at one point of time all the screens in delhi were showing your one or the other movie either in repeat run or running in Silver or Golden jublilee weeks or new release. I, dare any of the so called & entirely media made ”KING KHANS & KUMARS ” etc.-etc.;to make even one film of theirs run like that [ of course D.D.L.J. is an exception to the rule ] . So; in your efforts to silence your critics and people who do not deserve a mention; i;& millions of your fans are with you. hope you get to read this as i was just watching your interview on T.V. &you were saying that you may not be able to go through each and every blog. Dear Mr. Bachchan,

Irony in your writing and your personal life. I have grown up reading the magazines saying Big B is the most punctual actors the film industry ever had. Yet I see your writing and staying awake till late and then rushing here and there. Do you think all this is biologically possible. I have due respect to your blogs and your writings but is it feasible that uou sleep around 4 and wake up before the sunrise. If it is then I’ll ask you not to do so as health is wealth and minim of 6hrs of sleep is necessary. And if it is like that somebody has been kept to write whatever your daily routine is or whatever you want your fans to know that has happened in past, in your personal life or your new ventures or your tryst with media. If the second case is true don’t you think so that blogging is a very very personal thing. I have no idea whether you have read blogs of any common person or not, they just pour their heart into it and feel comfortable, if you yourself are maintaining this blog then its very good and if not then believe me writing your blog with your own hands gives immense pleasure and the feel of suffering just goes by. I would really appreciate if you could clear this out. Because many of your fans feel as if Mr. Bachchan is only addressing them.

  88. Nikhil says:

    Dear Sir,
greetings from the suburbs of Mumbai. I happened to read one of your previous blog entries about your Mac software not being configured for you to write in Hindi.
Just in case that problem has not yet been resolved, please read the following walkthrough and you should be able to type in perfect Devanagari script in next to no time. :)

    {The only issue here is of the OS - I am presently using Tiger - but I’m told Leopard also runs on the same basic framework and the walkthrough I’m providing should suffice for that too.}

    So here goes -

    1. In the dock, look for the ‘System Preferences’ icon. Open it.

    2. In the System Preferences window, you’ll see a plethora of sub-directories and their icons. The first row is under the heading ‘Personal’. The fifth icon (of a blue flag) is marked ‘International’. Click on it and open.

    3. The International menu will have three sub-menus in tabs - ‘Language’, ‘Formats’ and ‘Input Menu’. Click on ‘Input Menu’.

    4. The Input Menu tab opens a scrollable window table on top of which is stated ‘Select the keyboard layouts, input methods, and palettes for the input menu’ .
The first row states ‘Character Palette’ and there is a check box before it. Below it is ‘Japanese Kana Palette’ and below it is ‘Keyboard Viewer’.
Check the check-box before Keyboard Viewer.

    5. Scroll down in the same window - you’ll see languages and flags, starting with Hangul, Kotoeri etc. Scroll down till you see ‘Devanagari - QWERTY’.
    Check the box before it.

    6. Below this window are two sub-tables. ‘Input Menu Shortcuts’ - leave as it is.
Below that is ‘Input Source Options’ - in that, check the ‘Allow a different input source for each document’ option. This will allow you to switch between English and Hindi in the same document, even in the same sentence :)

    7. Lastly, check the box at the bottom of the window - ‘Show input menu in menu bar’.
Now you should be able to see a small U.S flag and the word ‘U.S’ right next to the battery indicator in the main bar, next to the day, time and Spotlight icons.

    8. Close the ‘International’ table and you’re ready to type in Hindi!!

    * MS Office still doesn’t natively support the Mac Devanagari font, so you’ll have to type your documents in either the Mac pre-installed Text Edit or the iWork word processor Pages.

Now whenever you’re typing anything, all you need to do is click on the flag icon on the top bar, a pull down menu will show ‘Devanagari - QWERTY’ with a ‘क’ icon just before it. Select it, the flag changes to show ‘Devanagari’ अौर बस, अब अाप हिन्दी में टाइप कर सकते हैं !

The great thing about this is that the keyboard is phonetic, so ‘d’ becomes ‘द’, ‘g’ is ‘ग’. Now type the same ‘d’ as ‘D’ - as in with the ‘Shift’ button pressed then it becomes ‘ध’ and ‘G’ is ‘घ’ !
I find it really liberating to type this way because unfortunately I can’t type with a proper Hindi keyboard.
Once you try it out a few times, you’ll see it works like a charm.

And just to get started on which key is what, click on the US flag/Devanagari-QWERTY icon on the top bar and the pull down menu shows ‘Show Keyboard Viewer’ as the third option. Click on it and a small window opens with the QWERTY Devanagari keyboard on it, listing the corresponding Devanagari letters on the keyboard!

For additional help, here’s a small downloadable pdf from the Mac site.

    http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/software/U96600025AILKUM.PDF

Page 31 lists and shows the 4 ways in which you can use the keyboard to type all the words in Hindi.

I hope you’ll be able to activate the Devanagari fonts on your Mac now and type, sometimes, in the language. If nothing else, the next time you quote your esteemed father’s poetry, maybe you’ll write the lines in Hindi, the language he made so very beautiful, the language in which the words were meant to be seen in, not twisted around the stiff and sullen alphabets of English.

    Warm regards,
    N

P.S. To switch between languages all you need to do is change the language option on the top bar - select the ‘U.S’ flag and you type in English, click on the flag and select ‘Devanagari’ and you’re typing in Hindi. Once set, it’s as easy as that.
The Mac is incredible in pre-installed Asian language support, one of the reasons I like it so much. :)

    Sincerely,
    N

    Sir,

I have to hand it to you, this blog has been very entertaining to read and I just love the sarcasm and wit. A lot of celebrity bloggers(lets not take names) tend to be politically correct, which then kills the basic idea of a blog. A blog is ones own space where he/she is free to write anything bout anyone as long as he/she doesn’t hurt the sentiments of any communities.

I was apprehensive when I heard that you’ve begun blogging and thought that like other celebrity bloggers, you may take the same route. I humbly apologize for the assumption and being a senior blogger(4 years now!) I’d like to give you a standing ovation for not falling to stereotypes and holding your own…

As far as hosting is concerned, I dont know what zapak has for you, but make sure you use a good platform such as wordpress and not one of those shitty customized software that most ppl parade for exorbitant rates.

Sir,do you believe in karma!.Not in the spiritual (Indian sense) but in actual spiritual sense(that we are all connected and form one cosmos).I am asking because i have started to feel the immense power of the universe. I think that this universe of ours is an awesome space to leave in because everything can be felt in this universe.
Each and every aspect of life when accompanied with its artistic essence makes life great(In the case of life the artistic essence is spirituality).Thats the reason a lot of great creations done in human history werent conceived looking at the monetary but to help other people .Even in recent times GOOGLE guys have done it! and even though they give free search power to the masses they take on the big evils like Microsoft.

    Dear Mr. Bachchan

I have been an avid reader of your blog since its initiation. I really admire you as an actor but I respect you far more for being a well-read and intelligent person with exemplary family values…..I have never read any of your father’s works but the little you quote here and there in your blogs has gotten me really interested. Have any of his works been translated into English? The depth of his thought conveyed in such simple language is beautiful to read.

All these years I have admired you and your family for maintaining a “dignified silence” on a lot of controversies unlike nowadays. I sense a certain disdain in your mention of “dignified silences” in your blogs. Don’t you think your family’s responses on news channels fuel the controversy and give chance for further misinterpretation? In my opinion dignified silences will let the controversy die a natural and quicker death.

Looking forward to read more of your musings.
    Take care
    Divya

amitabh.. u rock.. i am a big fan of yours and have seen all (and i mean all) your movies multiple times.. IMO ur top 3-4 movies are kala pathar, jurmana/shakti and main azaad hoon.. they may not be the best from an entertainment perspective but in terms of your performance, they defi are my top 3-4.. also, contrary to what most people believe Deewar is not ur best performance.. its a great performance (and the best of that year), but in that movie you were still very raw - which does come across - ob one is able to make the comparison because of the way u have honed ur skills.. Trishul on the other hand is definitely more nuanced (which i kno came out in 1978).. do u agree with this assessment?

  103. Satyam says:

How perverse the media is! The idea of Amitabh Bachchan running a blog is so extraordinary that he must have nefarious reasons for doing so. But one would even gladly accept these than the insult that one is doing this for money! I sometimes feel that I’ve become a Jeremiah of sorts fuming and fulminating against the Indian film media. And yet what else might one do when such rich examples are constantly on display?!

Let’s not kid ourselves. A blog by Amitabh Bachchan would hardly offend if it could be normalized as yet another blog by a celebrity. But unfortunately (for those offended) Amitabh Bachchan has decided to actually write intelligent commentary on his blog. He has decided to be witty and polemical and provocative and sincere. He has spoken to his blog readers with the greatest authenticity. Illustrating therefore that the media which always complained about him never deserved the ‘hard copy’ it always desired from him! The media is insulted. Amitabh Bachchan never gave it so much to chew on! But worse, he now chooses to to take sides in various debates on his blog or offers real commentary!

Doesn’t this sort of ‘authenticity’ offend a plastic media forever used to spinning banality of the worst kind? Doesn’t this kind of blog really subvert the media narrative on Amitabh Bachchan (and related matters)? How will the media possibly live with a blog where even ‘anonymous’ people like ‘Satyam’ who insist on even sharper commentary are not banned or censored (or censured)?! Amitabh Bachchan says uncomfortable things on his blog but then also allows those who visit it to partake in the enterprise! This is an affront!

The media furor is entirely understandable!

The other day you referenced Hamlet and Faust and Shakespeare in a few sentences and here I was thinking that you had given the media yet another ‘complex’, yet another reason to dislike you! You should never commit the sin of appearing more educated than those in the media! Even in the US the media does not take kindly to this (Gore learnt this the hard way in 2000!). If Hamlet had faced the Indian film media he would have decided ‘not to be’ in a hurry!

    Hi,

Interesting interview and nice mixing up of facts. That’s the media as we all know it. ;-)
I’m surprised nobody has yet commented. I bet by the time I post this, someone has.
Anyway, I’m from Germany and know absolutely nothing about Indian films. Someone suggested I watch Sholay to get a glimpse of good Indian cinema. I looked for your name online, so that’s why I am here.

    Best wishes,

    Respected Shri Amitabh Bachchan ji,

Im Kiran STS,from Hyderabad..and I have been a great fan of yours..Honestly speaking, Im just 21 years old..and the only old movies I watched are all yours and I absolutely loved them all..

Abhishek has got a great career ahead of him and i wish him all the success..Films are only a matter of Luck and good scripts coming to you..he will get back on top..

Personally, I was very miffed watching the recent award ceremonies..GURU not fetching awards for Abhishek and Aishwarya????? Both were equally magnificient and enough praise has been showered on them..Filmfare awards 2008 is a blot on their history..it shows star power and performing on stage fetch you awards..Darsheel Safary getting the award was fine..ShahRukh was good in ChakDe..but with all due respect to him..He was noweher near compared to Abhi’s performance in GURU..and Itz high time people stop gazing at Ashz beauty and notice her acting prowess..By the time those jury members got enough of Ash’s beauty, i think the show was over and thats why i think they dint notice her performance..Huh..Itz frustrating to say the least//

And yes Sir..Congratulations for getting the most suitable bahu in India..Im the biggest fan of Ash and I respect her for her dignity and integrity..With her beauty, she could have had the world at her feet..But, she chose her parent’s pride and dignity to superstardom and may be many more films with SRK etc etc..Had she succumbed, she could have been the number 1 actress ..But she wouldnt have been the wonderful human being that shw is today..YOUr GRANDCHILDREN will be proud to say their mom got to the top with her dignity in tact..Coz’ in the current times..unless you are a star-kid, or you succumb to the whims and fancies of the producers/directors you cannot reach the top..I cant believe there are actresses who break marriages and relationshipd to saty in their so called ” CAMP “..So, itz refreshing to have someone like and Aishwarya rai - Bachchan..with her dignity..

And Jaya aunty is awesome..She too sacrficed her career for the upbringing of Abhi and Shwetha ji..And today Sir, If you are proud of looking at your kids - most of the credit Im afraid shoudl go to Jaya ji..

OK, Got to get back to work now..even though itz a sunday :(…

YOUR FAMILY IS AN INSPIRATION TO PEOPLE OF ALL GENERATIONS AND IM SURE ASH WILL CARRY FORWARD D LEGACY..

BUT THE CUTEST IN YOUR FAMILY HAS 2 BE YOUR GANDSON AGASTHYA…I HOPE HE WOULD BE THE NEXT SUPERSTAR..

Happy Bloggin Sir, I hope you read this small article from me..

ofcourse, you might be receiving 1000z and itz quite possible you may miss mine..But i can only pray you read this./..i just want 2 convey my opinion about your family..

    Wish yu all the best..have a gud 1 !

But whatsoever I love to read your blog I still feel connected. Naive i may be in my thinking but just can’t help my inquisitive nature, guess that’s why I am a scientist. Sometimes I feel like why there is no remake of hollywood classics like Ben-Hur, Gone with the wind, casablanca, castaway. Recently I did see some hindi movies having the ingredients of hollywood stuff like The Notebook or my first 50 dates. But definitely it did come out to be very good in hindi as well. I personally feel that few hollywood classic roles would suite you very well. As for your acting career is concerned….I feel Indian cinema has never seen such a terrific actor. Whatev
