Thank you Shobha for your acknowledgment and for making my blog the ‘talk of the nation’. There have been some other editorials on similar topic expressing similar sentiment and I shall be expressing my views on them later, but your column has its own gifted prominence. Shobha De is Shobha De, everyone reads it.

Your advice of not to apologize I shall not be able to accede to, simply because if I have felt strongly that there has been error on my part, I will submit regret. Some characteristics I shall not be able to change, otherwise what would be the difference between Shobha De and Amitabh Bachchan !

And please Shobha, reference our conversation on Anil Ambani’s private jet to Goa for the launch of his brother-in-law Raj Salgaonkar’s exquisite book, DO NOT change the design of your own book that I had the good fortune to launch.

My remark at the end of my speech for your book launch - ‘Finding the name of the author in a font larger than that of the title of the book is a conscious and brave beginning’ - was not to ‘put you in your place’ as you self consciously whispered to me on stage, it was a fitting culmination to the context of my speech. It was a compliment to the power of woman, a recognition of the strength of 50% of their presence in society, an acknowledgment of equal if not more opportunity to women in our world and to make it a right for them to share equal space in this otherwise male dominated chauvinist archaic belief.

And do not let Vir Sanghvi, Editor, Hindustan Times tickle you on this !

Oh ! About the creases on Aishwarya’s dress, I never noticed any and it is hardly expected of a team of 15 stylists, dress makers and make up professionals from Armani to L’Oreal working on her for hours since the morning of the event, to have overlooked such obvious detail. The protocol at the venue is strict and disciplined. Celebrities are seated in respective special Festival cars to ride in a motorcade almost 50 meters long to a destination just 100 meters away; the crowds, and traffic and paparazzi making this innocuous little journey an hour long ! Sitting on any dress this long would crease.

I am disappointed though that your customary wit failed to notice the creases that needed repair on the faces of many of the other celebrated stars from Hollywood. Whither patriotism ??

Talk to me sometime. I was seated in close vicinity to several of them. Not a patch on our Industry beauties !!

Love to all -

Amitabh Bachchan

Hello respected sir, my last comment was apparently deleted as I assume it contained certain names which are better off not mentioned here. None the less, the reason I visit your blog is not because I am a fan of yours (I am) but the fact that you speak things that have sound reasoning, immense amount of thought (you are a grand father after all). This post of yours compelled me to post a reply (this time not mentioning names) the part about the author’s name being how it is, is apt and I will certainly use it somewhere (without giving you credit for it :P)

Another thing I would certainly like to say that I have learnt from stalwarts like you is to be true to yourself, be politically correct when need be, being humble & accepting your mistake.

Thank you for the same. I hope you will keep blogging for there are people who like to listen/read & learn

Hahahaha!! How interesting. I posted my comment, and immediately, you were back with the Shobhaa De column. Good for you!

I thought Aishwarya looked stunning in every photo I have seen from Cannes. My disappointment was in that there were not photos of the family in any place I have looked. I realise you were there in “family” capacity, but you are all celebrity in your own right, surely you should have had photo ops?

    Much love,

basically a lot of people are burning with jealousy at the sight of the bachchan family on the red carpet at Cannes. i am really enjoying everyone making it the talk of the town.

sit back and enjoy the tamasha amitabh ji - after all the hard work and risks the least the 4 of you deserve is some red carpet time. btw, how many combined hours of film careers do the 4 of you share? something like 100 years?

The people who bother to buy her trashy books and literature are not the main crowds. They are some cranky people in themselves. People dont love her. People just love to read her trash. But even then she is not rank of Arundhati Roy. So please dont stoop down to answer small and unreputed dogs barking on roads. Thats the least they can do. Let them do it.. The world has become a really sad place. On one hand we blame celebrities of being divas and tantrum kings rather then focusing on real work and art, on the other hand creases on Aishwarya gown are such a controversy. I fail to understand she is out there representing India, representing Indian women, Indian beauty and all we are worried about is creases on her dress. Aishwarya is a public figure…well understood but isn’t it true that by the end of the day we are all human beings and these are natural human flaws given the nature of these events. I mean if nothing else now other then Abhishekh movies flopping or how the new couple will get divorced soon or Big B vs.. Sharukh Khan…..lets just start something new on the daughter in laws dress creases….Journalism has truly lost its meaning….

    Dear Mr. Bachchan,

I guess some technical error pushed this post from our view! The date is May 19th, but the Blog title is Day 34.

Why is Bhoothnath sold out at a Multiplex in Bangalore on a weekday like today? Weekend ticket rates are too expensive and weekdays is when I can afford a movie, but on weekdays I am so hard pressed on time (in normal waking hours) that I had to squeeze time to make it to the Multiplex (you know how unforgiving the IT industry is in Bangalore!).. Alas..! Missed it. Next Wednesday maybe. Somehow, mid-week, one is able to make some time :-)

How have you been? Not sleeping too much I would say!

Just wanted to ask you a question. Hope you get the time to read this and perhaps respond. Not forcing, just a humble request, Sir. Which would you rate as the better English language movie amongst the following:
    a) Citizen Cane
    b) Shawshank Redemption
    c) Taxi Driver
    d) Reservoir Dogs
    e) The Godfather

    Would love your opinion.

On a first glance it seems quite disturbing and on second thoght “what’s new”-they (Reporters-Khalid, Shoba de and others) all follow similar pattern and that pattern is quite disgusting and selfish.

First she quite intentionally starts with praising SRK and then connects with AB’s apology to SRK and then completely diminish the blog. That’s cat talk and hitting below the belt. Listen lady and listen very carefully (1) There is no rift betn AB & SRK and yours childish attempt to create that (By praising one and insulting other) is not going to succeed. (2) First learn the people skill and then evaluate (3) There are millions and millions who love, respect and compliment to AB not only for his acting skill but also for his communication skill and ability-Don’t underestimate that!

I have to agree with Shobha De when she says that your blog has become a national subject. But then the ‘event’ has never been too far from whatever you’ve attempted. I must also agree with her (and I have expressed the same sentiment at least three times before on this blog) that there was simply no need to apologize to SRK. First of all I am simply puzzled as to what you are apologizing for! The mere fact that you put up those graphs? But these weren’t ‘designed’ by you. These were put up on a website and you responded to the material much as you have responded to much else in the media. The editorial judgment implied in putting up those ratings was hardly your own. If anything you were apologetic in the piece for Shahrukh’s low ratings! Let’s be frank. Shahrukh has not matched your ratings in KBC and the ones for Paanchi Paas are rather abysmal. Now it might be that the IPL is partly responsible for this. In which case Shahrukh would have been guilty of a certain cannibalism (!) for he’s part of both enterprises! In any case it seemed to me at the time that you performed the rather heroic task of trying to rescue those ratings of Shahrukh’s attempts from the obvious interpretation. That KBC hadn’t done too well with him and Paanchi Paas is so far underwhelming to be polite about it.

The media however spun this into an attack by Amitabh Bachchan on Shahrukh Khan. They went on and on about it for days. Finally you apologized. But for what? This precisely is what puzzles me! For defending Shahrukh in the first place? Or for responding to those graphs and introducing these onto your blog? If the former then you obviously should have corrected the deliberate media mis-reporting as you have indeed done on so many other occasions on this very blog. If the latter then you have unfortunately allowed yourself to be censored. It is entirely appropriate for you to comment on anything on your blog, especially when it pertains to you. Those graphs compared your ratings with Shahrukh’s and you responded and in turn rendered an ‘apologia’ for Shahrukh! A remarkable act of humility and generosity. So why did you have to apologize?!I would certainly not want you to become like Shobha De. You are quite right here! But there should not be needless apologizing.

Hello Mr Bachchan, first of all I should say I am a great admirer of yours, recently I saw your movie ‘Bhootnath’ and was disappointed, the movie had nothing to offer, movie depicted as it’s a crime to go abroad for the living.
I just wanted to know your views ( if you are reading ) about the Indian cinema, I have always though to make a good movie one should have a solid script and then u can have location/dress designer etc, but these days in our Hindi film industry we have costly sets, wonderful locations, expensive designer clothes, lots of skin shows which is being named as ‘Item Number’ but story is absent and as a result we make 99% lousy films… and these days every 2 nd film is a bad remake of Hollywood movies…so my question to you is
Do we really have dearth of stories?
Do our producer/directors know what they are serving to the crowd?

Incidentally one learns this at great cost to oneself that “Don ki pakadna mushkil hi nahin namumkin hai”! Alas, Shahrukh did not learn this lesson very well when he attempted a remake that was farcical by definition! He also did not learn the same when took up KBC. Sadly, Javed Akhtar himself could not din some sense into Farhan to not attempt such a remake! He even assisted his son which can only be chalked to the ‘calling’ of a father. Javed Akhtar can often be seen on various TV contests, displays remarkable judgment, and in general reveals the very keen intelligence that he has always been. His eyes are the most sparkling ones in the industry. If the new Don did just about half-decently in box office terms I can only attribute this to the bad taste of contemporary multiplex audiences who have often neither ’sensibility’ nor ‘memory’ (it should have been a complete flop!). The original Don, the ‘only’ Don as far as this viewer is concerned, was one of your great triumphs. The Don character (not Vijay) is the king of cool in Hindi cinema. There is a moment there when you walk across the bridge to give the ‘DCP’ a message who is waiting right below. I have stated many times in many contexts that this lazy yet leonine gait, equal parts style and authority, is the greatest such moment in Hindi cinema. Almodovar often talks admiringly about classic Hollywood stars and how they knew to walk on screen. In Hindi cinema no one has ever equalled you even in this respect. One could say much more about Don but no matter. One should let those who remake things get away with some dignity. And then I don’t want to be completely hypocritical. I used to criticize the Don remake all the time but then you attempted Aag and I was not on terra firma anymore in the context of this debate!

There could have been a Don remake, the right one, I offered this idea at the time:

“Getting back to Don I think if you’re casting Shahrukh then the only way to go is parody. However another way to do it is to have a very ordinary guy (who is the exact antithesis of the charismatic Bachchan) who for some reason is ‘haunted’ by Don [somewhat like Play it again Sam (as in the Herbert Ross film)structurally though not in the comedic mode and certainly not with a physical Bogart-like character as in that film], who goes through a set of events in life that somehow resemble the story of Don. And it becomes a kind of schizophrenic existence for him. Obviously it would take some out of the ordinary technical qualities for the film to work. But a final Borgesian twist on the whole thing would be to suggest (and of course there would be ambiguity throughout) that the real Don (character and film) were somehow an invention of this guy’s imagination. So in a sense the film Don would be given the status of a kind of reality because the character’s life would keep drawing on it and not umimportantly this would illustrate the status of a ‘classic’ as a film going beyond the limits of ordinary movie-going experience and becoming a part of ‘lived’ life. On the other hand the deconstruction would unhinge not only the canonical status of the original film but also destabilize the ‘reality’ that has always been mediated by films such as Don.”

Shobha must know and admit that Amitabh would have been more renowned than her in case he was an author instead of an actor.

Thanks for getting the chance for comment and with best of my regards,

When someone’s identity and job is in crisis then it’s natural that people get offensive and sometimes defensive. This is what is happening to journalist all around india. Now, they don’t have first hand news from the top celebrity of India. They are unable to make money out of it, yes money. To their utter surprise, celebrities are termed as a very very prolific writer. Even their job is in trouble now. What will happen if all of these top artists start their own blog? It will be very horrible for the journalist, a disaster.
After this blog has started, I have heard and watched lots and lots of news made out of this. In the first place this shouldn’t have been news at all. There are so many things to report starting from fight for poverty to developing one’s country as a whole but nooooooooo. Journalists want controversies, they want something MASALA to build their report on. With this blog, my hypothesis about yellow journalism has further strengthened.
One thing which no one should forget is kings, celebrities, politicians, journalists, everyone is human being in the first place. So, It is natural to make mistakes. So what is wrong that if someone apologies after wards. This shows that person has mind process which is active and who knows what is wrong and what is right. It’s impossible to be good with everyone in this world. Enough is enough. What can a person do when, what he wants to say is always turned and twisted by the journalist for their own profit. I guess there was no much option in the past but now due to internet all these things have changed. Head on head there can be rebuttal if something is fake. So, it may create problem to some because it has overshadowed them.
BUT FOR GENERAL PUBLIC LIKE US, WE ARE GETTING 100% TRUE NEWS WITHOUT ANY DISTORTION.
Keep blogging and don’t pay any heed to anything like this matter.

    Dear Amit Jii, namaskar!

Sabse pehle to Shobha Ji ko dhanyawad ki unhone aapke blog ko “Talk of the Nation” kaha, jo vastav mein sahi hai.

Beharhal, “Bhootnath” dekhi apne patidev ke sath jakar. Movie agar bachchon ko bandhe rakhne mein samarth hai, to badon ko bhi ektak dekhne ko vivash karti hai. Hasy ke ras mein dubokar jis tarah se ek shiksha dene ka pryas hai movie mein ki mata pita ki bhavnaon ka samman karein, apne samskaron ko na bhulein, wo vastav mein prabhavatmak ban pada hai. Aur apke abhinay ke vishay mein to kuchh bolna chhote muh badi bat hogi, par us bachche ka abhinay bhi bahut sarahniy raha.

    Respected Sir,

    Good Morning.

I have read your blog written in reply of Shobha Day’s article. Why people of our country don’t appreciate people like Aishawarya who represent our country at International level. Aishawarya, Susmita, Lara….these women are proud of our country but media always ready to make comments on them and shobha days article shown that they are ready to catch any worthless topic to make comments.

This is your blog so it is very natural that you can describe your views in your own way. But as a famous personality it is not good that you should reply such type of article in your blog. Surely it makes things more and more controversial.

As a father you defend your daughter Aishawarya and you defend your family that’s very good. But it is not good that you reply each and every comment made by media in such type of worthless article.

Aishawarya is a person who always maintain her dignity in any situation. Many times media wrote many things about her but she never replied about any stupid comments made on her. She proves her self by her work only. So this is the best way to maintain dignity and respect she got.

And Sir you have also done the same thing. You also proved your self by your hard work. And you have such huge fan following that really believe in you than it doesn’t seems good that you reply each and every worthless comments made by media or others.

As far as matter concern to statements made on you like you have paid money for the blog or very serious comments that really hurt your self respect then you reply thats o.k. in such case it is necessary to express your words and your views to the people so they come to know the truth. Otherwise it seems like one day one says this and you reply and second day another one say something else and you reply.

And its not look good one day you reply to someone on his/her comment and next day say sorry about that reply. That become “Masala” for such type of article. As others do made some comments in front of media then next day change the words or ask for apology for that comment. Its good for media by this they get some “Masala” but it is not good for the people who really love their favourite stars. Because somewhere this type of things creates impression like all these are created just to get publicity.

Please sir don’t follow this path. You are very dignified person. And we have lots of respect and love for you. And we really believe in you.

Sir, I am too younger than you so it is not like that I am giving any advice to you. And who am I to decide on what matter Mr.Amitabh Bachchan should react and on which he should not react. But as your fan what I think and what I feel about your blog that I express over here.

Have a nice day. With Regards,

You have shown you know the art of silencing people like Shobha De. They say “empty vessels make much noise”. Now you have put the lid where it needed to be put - crease or no crease. Sir,
    1) She is testing u.
    2) All her comments about the blog are not worth reading, I am not defending.
    3) She must understand u were not aware to blog before and there is no harm in giving explainations on somebody else acts or words if we do not agree.
    4) Why people read Shobha Day because she speaks either way as per her mood and unpredictable, I never read her but from this Article I can make out that.
    5) The Article she wrote on Shahrukh is conveying what she felt about the publicity created, Now has she asked Shahrukh how much he read Ravindrnath Tagore. and Now after all these defeats will he have the same popularity.
Public memory is very very less and he must have forgotton by thousands now.
    6) She has used the world diluting, it shows she is talking about two faces, I am sorry she is a full (full of self). I chanlange I seat before her and let her read me
    7) I don’t know why u give so much importance to her, tell me after u read her stories what exactly u get, it is just any Tom Dick Harry’s opinion.
    8) She is successful media writer as she knows how to twist, Will u put on the blog any thing she wrote where inteligence is invloved.
    9) U speak to her no issues but that time her second face will come where self is satisfied.
    10) Its good u have put it on blog otherwise I wud not have got chance to read and correct her.
Many thanks and your reply is at some diff level, I am afraid if she can reach there.
    Bye for now, Take care

Shoba De! Can you imagine commenting on the creases on Aishwarya’s gown? To put it mildly Aishwarya looked fabulous and held her own among all those other godesses! And no I did not notice any creases on her dress in any of the press photographs. De is definitely jealous for neither is she ever going to look one tenth as glam as Aishwarya did nor is she ever going to be invited to Cannes. Eat your heart Ms. De! I can hear Aishwarya having the last laugh and saying ’sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me…’.

I don’t think you need any dog or monkey or any other pet, by apologizing for the error in your part you prove yourself much greater as a human being.
I believe Ms Dey does not have that kind courage and guts. You cannot make everyone happy; if journalists are unhappy for loosing their copyright on you then we are happy to being closer with you. Sir, you carry on sharing your mind and experience with us if anybody asking for masalatalk or controversies they know where to click.
Sir I can not claim myself as your biggest fan because I don’t know the actual parameters but I simply love and adore you for your work and the style of living. Regarding SRK my observation is that he follows your footsteps by not commenting on Amir Khans. You express your worries about KUPPH`s decreasing TRP rates , that very true, one reason can be the IPL cricket matches which starts at same time with KUPPH.
Do you have any plan to return on television in near future?
Before I finish, I would like to mention that I am from Calcutta now Kolkata. So

    Dear Mr. B,

I have to agree with Shobha De on one count and disagree with her on another, but have to congratulate you for the befitting reply.
I have to agree that you should not have apologized to anybody. We have often seen SRK taking cheap digs at Amar Singh, RGV and you at very public forums i.e. The Filmfare Awards. Have we every seen anyone (SRK or the script writers) come forward with an apology where it was deserved. In your blog you had done nothing wrong in presenting TAM figures, you were just stating the obvious, just like the advertisement you had done for UP. So why apologize. Truth Hurts, period. Too bad if they can’t handle it and expect you to keep silent on lies about you and your family. If you do raise your voice all in the media go against you. Have we ever seen an apology from the 4th Estate? Keep your blogs fiery and no apologies PLEASE…
On the count I would like to differ with Sobha De is she talking about Girls only being branded as being bitchy or catty? We saw a perfect example of it when she saw the creases on Ashwariya’s dress and even mentioned it. This is a problem we have with Indians (apologies if I am offending anyone). We can’t digest the success of others. We are very good at pulling them down to embarrass them rather than support them at world forums where they are doing their country proud. We have all seen people taking digs at Ash for wearing the wrong dresses and also for wearing western and not Indian dresses. How many Indians do we know about that have been honored at such International forums?
We must all try and see the glass half full rather than half empty.

Added to my earlier…………Who is Shobha De? I am a bookish…who loves to read the novels, short stories and poems, comics and any articles……

In our country we had and have plenty numbers of respected writers……Does she even falls within the 200 of such greats……….

Can she even be compared with Arundhati Roy or Bikram Seth or Jhumpa Lahiri or Amit Chowdhury of this genre? So Mrs De better concentrate on your own work……………..and try to improve the literature quality of your work……..
Don’t be jack of all trades…………………there are some people who can earn their bread and butter for such topics………

Better, let other people to do their own work you need not to poke your nose in every matter

Thank you very much for letting us know how you feel about Ms Shobhaa De’s column, titled “Bhalo Bhashi”, in Bombay Times.

I would like all (fellow BIGBlog-spotters included) know how I feel about Ms. De’s column. Thus I take the liberty of appending an open letter to Ms. De.

    Warmest regards and much more,

    Neeraj Gupta
    *****

    Ms Shobhaa De:

“Bhalo Bhashi”, the title of your column in Bombay Times, roughly translated, means ‘love’ in Bengali. Correct? The question then is: ‘what’ or ‘who’ is the subject matter of ‘love’ in your column?

Are you feeling slighted by Amitji’s closing remarks on the occasion of your book launch recently and hence the indulgence in such preposterous writing? If you are feeling slighted, I am sorry to ask, did you send your great literary faculties on vacation to see an innuendo in Amitji’s speech when none existed?

Or, are you happily disillusioned that such unfounded indulgence would make you ‘more happening’? Again, sorry to say … all you could manage to do is … shoot from the hip!

Obviously, you did not think through all aspects of the ‘issues’ you’ve covered in your column, titled “Bhalo Bhashi”. It is a careless display of thoughtless writing; full of infantile exuberance and arrogance, damn the incidental research and sense of purpose!

Your demeanor, save in this instance, is graceful. But is it all that is to Shobhaa De? Of course, you would not like to be remembered long after you are gone for your myopic and desultory take on ‘issues’. Agree? I would be very happy for you, if would.

With best of wishes and kindest of regards,

    Neeraj Gupta

    Amit Sir,

Thats a problem with Shobha De and you fell in her trap. see she enjoys companies of famous and big and rich and powerful because she enjoys being wife of a rich man so on that front she is safe. she does not have to write to earn money but to maintain her position. she goes in parties as guest and people talk with her as a woman who is bit known but this is her mask as she is always in to investigating journalist mode and once come back at home she writes what she got off the record. so she is basically a dishonest person. she thinks her profession demands her to be impartial but she is always biased. she praises what she likes personally. She is not columnist and at best she is still journalist indulged in yellow journalism. She is still diirty with Star-dust.
It was bit astonoishing to see that you launched her book. She does not deserve. When she does not know anything about Cannes and still comments on dress of aishwarya then its a disgsting act for a journalist. She showed pretty nonsense attitude.
If she loves truth then she should have guts to say everything on your face but she is a coward who will whisper in your ears when sitting wth you but once at desk will write private things about you.
Do you remember Banty aur babli. Shad ali had shown that slogan inscribed on signboard of a sweet shop at Kanpur.
    Thaggu ke laddu
aisa koi saga nahin jise meine thaga nahin.
So shobha de is that thug. She is not sagee of anyone. She is selfish to level of cruelty and avoid her.
Its better to spend time with an honest journalist who has to struggle to survive than to waste time on page 3 journalist.
