Dearest All,
For long there had been requests that I write in Hindi too. Today I post a few words of welcome and gratitude to readers in my own hand since the method of putting computer to Devnagri is still unknown to me. Or I should say I do know of it but am still not proficient enough to be able to type it out.
It has got late today. I have just returned from the premiere of ‘Jaane tu…’. Aamir had requested repeatedly to come over. Abhishek was unable to come since he was with Aishwarya, still struggling with her measles and Jaya’s mother had a nasty fall in Bhopal, where she lives and so she had to rush there.
‘Jaane tu…’ is a wonderful sweet film; refreshing and filled with talent that is young and relaxed. There simply is no effort that can be noticed on any actor in trying to project that they are acting. Everyone so confident and cool; if I may borrow the colloquial.
The narration of the script is novel and different. The writing is ‘now’ and the atmosphere young and generation next. Imran and Genelia are delightful. For Imran it certainly does not look like the first film and Genelia has the most expressive eyes and face. Such a strange coincidence. She came in front of the ca mera in her early years for the first time in an advertisement she did along with me. It was the Parker Pen add., one of the earliest ones.
The premiere brought many of us together - Tabu and Vidya and Anil and Sonam and Juhi and Jiah - all of us huddled together in one group - meeting them after ages, yet happy that we could all sit together and enjoy a delightful film.
Prateek, Smita Patil’s son was so impressive in a small but significant role. His face so much his mother’s. Brought back all our memories together. ‘Shakti’ and ‘Namakhalal’ and all her fears of working in commercial escapist cinema. She was a dear friend and would often just drop by the house if she was in the vicinity. A strong girl, with equally strong convictions, but caring and concerned for all. It was her premonition that signaled my impending accident in 1982, on the sets of ‘Coolie’. I was in Bangalore shooting for the film and in the middle of the night I got a call from her. It was a bit surprising for me. She and I were not on telephone call terms. It was the first time I was receiving her phone and what she asked turned out to be true. She said she was worried for me and wanted to know if all was well for she had had a premonition that something wrong or dangerous was going to happen to me. I had joked about it with her. But 2 days later the accident on the set happened.
She was one of the many who prayed for my life everyday. Never ever showed it but quietly would visit Breach Candy and leave after inquiring after my condition. When I survived and came home to convalesce, she came every evening to the house to spend time and cheer me up, bringing with her a fresh set of the ‘mogra’, which she knew was my favorite flower.
She herself was a soft gentle and delicate human, full of compassion for others. Her death came suddenly and too too early. We needed her to be with us much much longer.
The entire film Industry had performed a concert HOPE 86 at Brabourne Stadium to collect funds for the workers stricken harshly by the Industry strike for better tax benefits from the Government. I was an MP then and on an official visit to Mauritius in a government delegation. The concert finshed at 3 am and I had rushed to the airport from the Stadium to catch my flight. It was a hopping flight via Singapore. On landing in Singapore I was informed that she was serious. In Mauritius, it was my first ever visit and Indian stars had just begun to visit the country. The hysteria was unimaginable. I have some footage and clips of that tour which I shall share with you soon. At every public gathering; and there were several, I would ask the audience to send up a prayer for Smita’s recovery. In a few days when I landed back I was told at the airport she had passed away that very morning. A great artist, a lovely human and a devoted friend had left.
On seeing Prateek on screen tonight, everything came back… except Smita !
Its beyond 3 am now and I shall have to be up in a few hours to dub for a Marathi film made by Ramesh Deo. My colleague from the days of ‘Anand’. He and his son and their company have made a historical and they wish to use my voice as a commentary. I shall start that by 6 am and then move on to regular shooting.
Life.. the wheel of time never stops..

Dear Amitji
I would strongly recommend using “Baraha 6.0″ or the latest version of it. It is really easy to type in Hindi using this program. The program is intitutive to use so the learning curve is quite good.

Aadarniya Amitjee,
I visit your blog severa times a day and am simply amazed and speechless at your energy levels! You put a young man to shame! Looks like connecting with people is infusing you with more spirit and zest for life! Each subject that you bring up, you make sure you add some depth into it and it is a rare treat for your fans to look at a different side of you, rather than just the “filmi” side, for the want of a better term! You really are a very down to earth person, so is Jayaji and it shows in Abhishek’s conduct too.
I am sorry to hear about Jayaji’s mother’s injuries. I wish her a speedy recovery. Good to hear that Abhishek has resumed work. Eagerly awaiting the news that Aishu has started to feel better too. How is her dad recovering from the surgery? That news never made the headlines - so until you told us, we had no clue.
With all my love and admiration,
Ami

Dear Amitji:
Yes we all miss Smita Patil.
My two favorite actresses Smita Patil & Jayaji. One is gone and Jayaji left films (almost). Wish we could have Jayaji acting again.
I would like to ask her … Do you think you can contribute more to the society through medium of politics then films?
If possible please post her response.
Thanks

good to see that you are trying something new every day. typing in hindi is not very hard only you have to remember the letters and the matras in devnagari lipi. once you start you will start typing within a week. Great to see something written in hindi.. To be honest, we havent used hindi/devanagiri script since school.. With lots and lots of respect Sir— I am at work and I am going to use my afternoon coffee break with you.
I just finished reading day 71(1). You made me so emotional for two reasons.
I love reading Hindi and talking to people in Hindi something which is quite difficult if you are living outside India. We have a large population of Indian people here in Vancouver Canada but most of our brothers and sisters are from Punjab. One only gets to speak Hindi at home and with only few selected friends. But you will have to give me some credit Sir, I have taught both my daughters good spoken Hindi, at home we ONLY speak Hindi.
I really had wanted you to write in Hindi but here I get to see your hand written Hindi which just made my day. Seems like you just wrote for me, a personal note to Deepak Bhardwaj from Amitabh Bachchan. Looking at your hand writing is like listening to music. It just seems to be flowing.
The other reason was that you talked about Late Smita Patil. She is my all time favourite.
There was something about her that spoke to me through her face on the screen. She felt like a part of the family. I remember one incident from back home. My mother’s good friend who had nothing to do with cinema admired her so much. She always thought of her as her beti and this used to intrigue me and I as a 20 year old would wonder why this lady loves Smita so much and consider her as her beti. I never got my answer but the incident that has remained me was when she came home after watching Namak Halal and boy o boy was she upset. She said how could Smita do Aaaj rapat jaayain song? She thought that Smita has betrayed her and she was upset for so many days.
I have imagined so many times lately that if she would have been around, she could have played your other half in so many movies. I can see her as your wife in Nishabad quite effortlessly.
Thank you for talking about her. Please also talk about Late Sanjeev Kumar, that is one other actor I really miss and since you worked in so many memorable films together. It would be much appreciated if you share the memories from the time you got to spend with him during the filming of those movies.
Good to hear from you about JTYJN, I was planning to watch it anyway but now more than ever since you have liked it.
Sometime the perception one makes through movie magazines and media is that big stars are only friends with other big stars and its all about status and all that but here you treat everyone the same way. Aamir calls you– you go there, Ramesh Deo calls you – you go there. You see Sir, I don’t admire you for nothing.
I hope Jaya Jee’s mother feels better. Fall at her age is no good, my mother had gone through this at age 74 and it was quite tough for her and for us as well.
Good to know that your electrician is feeling better. What is his name? I rather read electrician Mr. so and so, rather than only electrician as his only identity.
With lots and lots of respect Sir- Deepak from Vancouver Canada

Dear Mr. B.,
It’s obvious that you have had many great, good friends in your life. You are most fortunate in that way … or should I say, you’ve been skilled at making good friends, as it is a skill, and no accident. I hope you’ll make your friends happy and live for many, many years more.
I saw yesterday for the first time clips from some of your live shows, which surprised me greatly. I would love to have seen one. But YouTube has proved to be a wonderful resource for seeing the things we can’t be there for in person. I must say your entrance on horseback in one show was really thrilling. Nobody looks as good on a horse as you do. I was stunned to see you ride in “Khuda Gawah” … I’ve wondered if I were seeing things, or if you really rode that horse just using your knees, with your arms up and out, or if it was a stunt … also, in “Satte Pe Satta” whether that was a mockup of a horse you were holding up by his forelegs or a real horse? I couldn’t imagine your doing something so dangerous … of course, I know, movies are illusion. But I looked hard and couldn’t figure out how it was done, if it was a trick.
I’m so sorry about your wife’s mother … I hope the injury is not a long time healing. She and I would be about the same age, I think, and I know it’s difficult when you fall at this age. I’ll say a little prayer for her.
Do have a good day today, in spite of lack of sleep …
Aloha from Hawaii …

I am sorry to hear about Jayaji’s mother. Wish her and also Aishwaraya a speedy recovery. Great to hear Abhishek can get back to work and the electirician’s surgery went well. With these things happen to your loved ones, I hope you too will always have enough rest and never neglect your health.
Smita is one of the finest actresses in my eyes. I like her performance, and wish that she would still be with us here today. Thank you also for the review of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. I am glad to hear you had a lovely time at the premier.
I agree with Vohra’s argument - news is completely subjective. The media should be more responsible in the message they try to send to the mass. However, in my opinion it is their nature to seek and draw attention. So we cannot really expect the media to always be cautious and considerate. On one hand it also depends on the audience’s judgment and ability to think critically before believing in whatever they have heard. Thus I feel education is the answer to this problem. Once the majority have developed critical mind and do not easily go berserk over issues that have not yet been proved, the media may also change their way of presenting their materials. They continue to exaggerate because the majority still prefer it that way. It is like an ongoing dynamic and cannot be solved by the media alone.
It is good to see your handwriting although I do not know understand the content. Should you decide to blog in Devnagri one day, please also make the English version available. It will be helpful for a non-Hindi speaker fan like me.
I really look forward to the release of Shoebite. I have a feeling it will be one of your greatest films like “Black” and “The Last Lear”. This may sound very selfish of me but I never want to see you retire. We fans can never get enough of you.
Have a lovely day and as always, take good care.

Smita’s demise was a major loss to Indian cinema indeed. It made the audiences be deprived of a very talented actress, and Shabana, the other parallel movie protagonist, be left without any creative challenge. Feel sorry for Prateek. She left even before he could feel her influence. Your family’s acquaintance with her was not reported until now. Thanks for sharing this sensitive, little info.

Mr. Bachchan,
It was wonderful reading a hand written article by you. I am going to print it out and keep it as a momento. Who knows, someday I may get a lot of money selling it on ebay.
If you liked Janne TU………. I am sure it will be a hit. Your article of Smita Patil was touching. She was lucky to have a friend like you. I enjoyed both the movies you made together. She was a great actress and I recall the days she worked for Doordarshan. With your blessings, I am sure her son will do well.
Hope Jayaji’s mom is recovering. A speedy recovery to Aishwarya and take care.

I was told at work today how to restore the system on my computer to an earlier date in order to be able to fix my problem with your blog. Thankfully and miraculously it worked, for without access to your blog, my computer is next to worthless for me. You can’t imagine how much it improves my life.
I wanted to see that film on opening night but I couldn’t get to the theater on time after my long commute from Long Island even if I hadn’t had a chiropracter appointment. If I don’t want to miss the 4th of July fireworks tomorrow, I’ll have to wait until the middle of next week to see it , but I definitely intend to see Jaane tu…. I wonder how Love Story 2050 is. I’m not a big sci-fi fan but we’ll see.
Thank you for sharing your memories of your dear friend and co-worker. I’m looking forward to seeing the clips of HOPE86. I have the DVD of your Jooma Chumma Tour where you arrive on the white horse in Wembley Stadium. I wish I could have seen you on that tour. The part where all the girls come up and hug and kiss you when they join you on stage is almost too much, you look so good.
Maybe you will not feel so lethargic today because you will be getting less sleep. This happens to me. I’m so used to the most 4 hours of sleep. If one day I get 6 hours, I’m usually more tired and look worse than usual. I think to myself that I got too much sleep last night.
Speaking of your commentary, a few months ago I watched and enjoyed the film Bhuvan Shome on ZeeTV. I didn’t know that it was your narrative. Even when the credits just said “Amitabh”, I thought it must be someone else because it seemed like an older film before your time. When I looked it up I saw that it was you.
I hope to hear only good news about everyone’s health from now on.
Love,
Rochelle

about smitha patil well i always see a strong similarity between her and tabu i dont know if you feel the same. I really loved smitha patil she was one the most natural actress of those times there has been a change from the 70’s in acting and depicting emotions on screen. But if one watches smitha patil act feels like if she would act the same way like she did even today she would be amazing.really sad that she passed away too soon. and thanks for sharing with us some of the moments in her life i hope her son does well and his dreams coem true.

your writing really brought image of late Smita Patil to front. she was really a very nice actress. it was really nice of you to narrate about her.
it is also good to hear about ramesh deo, haven’t seen him on screen for quite a long time, i don’t know whether i missed out or he has not come on screen of late.

Charansparsh !
There are good presentors(director/s) now-a-days but…
Where are original good story-tellers ?
“Shakti” was one the best movie and so was “Kaala Patthar”.
Technology has enhanced presentation no doubt but…
Where is the intensity of an actor ?
Where is next Amitabh Bachchan ?
Where are good dialogues ?
Total missing factor now-a-days.
Dont talk about script, talk about paisa and talks will continue for years…
Sad, very sad.

And everytime I see Namak Halaal or Shakti I see a couple who vibed well. You suited each other on screen. Her fiery performances in all her movies- especially Arth and Mirch Masala- will remain with me always.

Dear Sir,
It is is first time that I am visiting your blog. its such an amazing thing to see that a person like you personnaly pays too much attention to the blog and writing your views and comments 2.30 am when rest of us sleeping. Recently we had made a short film, the first of its kind in the history of Technopark, ‘The Myth’ and had a preview show at kalabhavan theatre, trivandrum, Kerala. It is then only, during the shooting, I understood the pain of the film makers and the effort involved behind it. Now when i saw you writing comments and communicating with us in the early hours of the day and the busy schedule that you come over and that would follow after a small span of three and half hours, I understand how one should be committed off himself. Ofcourse that is why you are the BIG B. Its our dream to have you, dont knwo how much time it would take, in our film and say ‘ amitabh ji the situation is like …. ‘:-). Anyways, all the very best in your all future endevours. we all will pray for you and your family.

Hi Mr. Bachchan,
it was a pleasure to read your hindi blog,
have always enjoyed your hindi diction in movies specially your, ‘ayai’
spoken like a true UPite,
bng born & raised , educated in lucknow & now having lived in US for abt. 4 decades lot of memories pop up,when small satellite came about & TV Asia became available it was a pleasure to get some renforcment abt hindi ,now there are about 14 indian TV channels that one can watch, while in old times we had to depend on BBC news on short wave radio for any connection to india,
how things have changed now if one talks to any one in india in hindi the reply is in english,
music connects us all ,it may be listing to classical or sitting on a moonlit night with friends on the terrace in india listing to old songs or some playing tabla on make belife objects , they all are price less,
so all the best, hope all the turmoile will come to a peace full end,

Dear Amitji,
Your memoire about Smita Patil was fantastic and at the end brought moisture into the eyes.
Yes, I am very keen to see Prateek and found him good looking, smart in his TV appearance. But I also want to watch Love Story 2050, since I think my six years old son would enjoy the sci-fi scenes. Meanwhile, he is already excited about the song “pappu can’t dance” - what a genius of Rehman!!! and demonstration of versatility. So probably I have got two movies to watch which I might break into the coming two weekends.
Let your family regain good health.
regards,
Kaushik
P.S. Like earlier you said that it is very important to get up earlier than the morning sunrise, I think it is equally important to go to bed before 11:00 pm. I believe The Great Lord, Hanuman, must have also done that
So, please go to sleep by at least 11:30.

Dear Amitji,
It is so good to see you write about the movie. I was actually thinking to request you to write about the movie (both Hindi and English) that you have seen recently. I am sure you have to attend a lot of premiers due to social obligations. Some of these movies you must like and most you must not (after all the good movie to bad movies ratio is very small). I am sure you will not be willing to write about the movies you didn’t like which is fair. But, we sure would like to hear about the movies that you did like. We are interested to hear about stuff you like and keep track of…movie, sports, politics (i am sure you will not discuss politics on this blof:-)), stock market, etc.

Amithi,
One more thing i would like to say…I had bit of a problem reading your Hindi. I was able to read everything, but, i had to make some efforts to do it. It wasn’t very obvious. I could think of two reasons for this…
(i) There is a age gap of 40 years between us. Probably the way Hindi was written in your times has undergone a change and was written a bit differently when i learned the language. (Just so that you know, i speak hindi very very well and was scored very good marks in Hindi in school)
(ii) Its very rarely that we get to read Hindi these days. When i was staying in India i atleast got to read some pamphlets and posters in Hindi. But from the time i have moved to the US, I can’t even remember the last time i read something written in Hindi. So probably i have difficulty in reading becaus i am not in touch with the language.
I would like to read what other readers have to day on this.

I am going little offtrack here, but I just couldn’t pass up posting this bit of information.I watched an excellent documentary on the Enron stock market scandal that happened in US.It was called Enron:The smartest guys in the room.
The reason I am posting this here,is because of two reasons
1)Sarkar Raj loosely hinted the whole Enron-Maharashtra tiff a few years ago for the Dabhol project and the documentary does cover that part
2)Media-The oft repeated topic on this blog and it’s comments. This documentary potrays two sides of the media.I will not disclose much here.
But it’s an excellent documentary. You can catch it on PBS channel in US or you could buy it on iTunes.

Delightful to see you pen a few words in Hindi!! I have to admit that I had to struggle - not because of your handwriting - that is absolutely beautiful - it was because I have never really read Hindi since I left India all those years ago. After a couple of reads, I believe I got all the words. You do have an absolutely beautiful hand!!
Smita Patil … wow … what a gorgeous and talented woman she was! I was quite young at that time but even then, she was one of my absolute favourite actresses. She was taken away from this world way too soon - she had so much more to give to this world. If you could see your dear friend and colleague in Prateek then I am sure the rest of us will as well and Smita will live on through him.
Convey our wishes for a speedy recovery to all in your family that are still unwell. Hope that with everyone else in the family busy caring for the other loved ones, you are taking good care of yourself … you have so much going on these days. It is Thursday night here in Toronto at this very second and I see you live in 2 weeks … so I have a vested interest of course in hoping that your stay healthy.
Be well!

Hi,
Your poignant thoughts on Smita reminded me of Tom Moore’s simple lines:
“Thus in the stilly night,
Ere slumber’s chain has bound me,
Sad memory brings the light
Of other days around me.â€
Will be seeing ‘Jaane Tu…’ soon with nieces and nephews; thanks for the input on it. It’s thoughtful of you to sit late at night and pen the words about Imran Khan and the movie, as one understands that like any new kid on the block (colloquial!), he’d be apprehensive to know what you would pen (or type).
Good wishes, don’t tire self, take care…

gilga
ps: Would be good once you have your Hindi transcripter working for you to have a Hindi and English simultaneous blog.

And above all I am biggest fan of your energy… Eagerly waiting to see more from you in Hindi.

Is the Indian media all FOREIGN owned?
Do these owners have some responsibilty for the lack of ethics, bias, gossip, lies, trash news today. Even the likes of TOI have become on par with the gutter press. The public does not respect or believe news reported by any of these once most respected brands
