Mukesh Mills, Mumbai, 2:59pm / 8:16pm

Location for tentatively titled ‘Shoebite’

Mukesh Mills ! Once a flourishing textile mill, right in the heart of Colaba, strategically positioned on the bank of the sea, now shut for endless years in dispute, withered, barren, dilapidated, but an exciting location for filming !

What once housed intricate textile technology, now the backdrop of intricate film tales. The workers that delicately worked round the clock weaving out fine clothing material, now replaced by another dedicated team of workers, weaving out fine film content.

The interiors look eerie. Time worn machinery still inhabits the large halls or ‘galas’. Drums made to contain finished raw material scattered about in abandon, twisted and rusted iron metal ravaged perhaps by a fire forming a perfect setting for dark scary visuals through the lenses of accomplished camera men and the only signs of occupation coming from the painted to suit film sets across the walls and exteriors. Spray painted graffiti here, a garishly colored wall there – left overs that entertained a group of hip hop video performers, swinging to the latest club beats.

As you walk across to the edge of the buildings a sudden gust of fresh breeze announces the large expanse of private jetty. This is where the boats came to load the finished product and ferried them to the bigger carriers parked deeper down in the Arabian Sea.

The little boats still crowd a corner of the jetty, their individual identifiable colorful flags, bobbing up and down through the restless muddy waters of the tide coming in and leaving at somewhat rapid intervals.

What is it about the sea, the ocean; this large expanse of water that mesmerizes one into just aimlessly looking out into it ?

Is it the volume. The unknown and unseen nature of its depth. The awareness that it occupies three fourths of the entire world we live in. A connection to our existence. What ?

Never clear why !

Right now though, as I prepare for the grueling beard and wig routine, my films clearly come flashing through. Akayla, Khuda Gawah, Agneepath, Hum… the list is endless.

But perhaps the most vivid – Hum, and the picturisation of the song ‘Jumma Chumma de de’.

My dear friend and producer of the film, Romesh Sharma and I had been battling for a number for a sequence for a while. On a private visit to Brussels, Belgium I walked past a music store and heard the notes of a song which remained with me. A few months later driving up to Abhishek’s school in Switzerland I heard some attractive notes of another song on the radio and it all came together. ‘Mukhra’ Belgium, ‘antara’ Switzerland and we had the song. Soon after it was recorded, there was Holi at Prateeksha and in the madness of the revelry of the festival, we played the song out to the hundreds of guests at an open house. Billu, as I fondly call Romesh, and I knew we had a winner.

We sat on the design, we sat on the location, we sat on the choreography and picked Mukesh Mills. Set up a section of the dilapidated factory into a workers entertainment centre and shot the song. I have never witnessed such enthusiasm and energy in all, during the shooting of this catchy number.

We had our moments though. A few months before that shooting I had been on a concert tour – Jumma Chumma in London. Wembley Stadium. 65,000 people. A first for any Indian concert. There was just Sridevi and myself and Kalyanji Anandji with Viju and his orchestra. But I wanted more artists. Two young first timers had suddenly erupted on the film firmament and had perhaps just one film to their credit. Aamir Khan and Salman Khan. It was their first stage show ever. I invited them to join us. Along with Anupam and Neelam we had the concert of our time. A film was made of it and it is available on dvd and video. The popularity of the song and the concert visual was now known to all. We had performed it on stage with exquisite Broadway dancers from New York. They had looked stunning. Would the impression of the song in the minds of the audience get disturbed with what they were now about to see on screen ? It was a challenge. One that dance director Chinni Prakash came out in flying colors with. The lovely Kimi Katkar, so gorgeous in her red dress and the only lady on set in the song, incredible. In every shot, the crew, the light men, the spot boys the producer, director, the crowds, all screaming and shouting, egging us on to give our best. What an atmosphere.

Today as we prepare for the Unforgettable Tour its been almost 18 years since I went on such a mission. It’s a frightening thought. At 66, everything seem frightening.

Time changes many aspects of life. Tastes, affections, following, all age.

As you slide down on the wrong side of the hill, the few left with sincere affection, have a condescending look. The spark of instant excitement has mellowed down. You go unnoticed on occasion. If at all there is notice it is a notice with silence and a smile that has some difficulty coming on.

It’s the way with this profession.

You wither away. You are out of sight and out of most minds. The shouts and screams for the latest is deafening ; for you just the odd call. Your autograph book could get snatched away in the middle of your signature if the younger heartthrob were to suddenly appear at same location. The hustle and bustle around you would shift there. From being the eye of all attention you are left with just an ‘I’.

Some of us adjust and succumb to changed circumstances. Some cleverly become the circumstances. And some, sadly never contend with the change. They believe and live in that glory forever. It requires strength and conviction and character to do that.

Many have it. Many do not. Some take the opposite route. A route of self destruction.

Attention is an elixir. When it is not available you shrink. A desolate traveler in search of that oasis in a turbid desert. But you never find it. An inviting mirage keeps beckoning. Only to disappoint. And then you perish.

What remains is an appreciable length of celluloid. If you are lucky. Most film footage is excellent chemical material for the manufacture of bangles.

Bangles, yes, on ladies hands. Adorning, delicate, colourful, at times a marked reminder through their clashing sound, of the presence of a lady in the room.

Somewhere in there, on their soft beautiful hands jangles the remnants of a creative artist, renowned for the depth of his own sound.

Somewhere. Lost in time.

As I drove by Santa Cruz one morning for work I saw Bharat Bhushan, the great romantic heart throb of the 50’s, hero of some of the most successful musicals of the times, standing in a queue at a bus stop ! An ordinary citizen. Part of the crowd. Alone, unnoticed. No one recognizing him. No one knowing who he was.

I wanted to stop and ask him into the car to drop him to his destination, but I could not muster enough courage. I feared I would embarrass him. And I drove on. But that visual has remained with me and will remain with me forever. It could happen to anyone. To any one of us.

How telling and haunting that poignant and unforgettable moment in the end sequence of Guru Dutt’s masterpiece, ‘Kaagaz ke Phool’….

And as I write to end this sharing, the symphony swells within and the strains of that eternal song spill out –

“Waqt ne kiya, kya haseen sitam,

Tum rahe na tum, hum rahe na hum..”

    Dear Mr Bachchan,

You are absolutely right. Glories fade away. One always salutes the rising sun.
The other day I was reading some comment from Farah Khan who said that she is not bothered about Manoj kumar any more when asked to comment about him who was supposedly filing some case against them since they had not deleted some objectionable scenes from ‘OM SHANTI OM’ which had portrayed Manoj kumar in very disrespectful way.Now I was wondering will she had the guts to talk this way for any other star in their primes…Its just that Manoj kumar the great artist who gave us so many superhit patriotic films is no longer one of the young heartthrobs ???
This thing happens in all walks of life. Young not caring about their elders…

Mr Bachchan i must say that you are very fortunate that even at this age you have a huge fan following and maintain a very respectful position in the eyes of millions. I wish that you keep on going this way for time immemorial.

“please tell him that he dint win an award bcos Srk’s performance in chak de was better than his in guru( though guru is his best performance by far)”

SRK’s performance? Pray enlighten me on what that could be? SRK is the most over-rated actor. He’s a 2 trick pony stuck with 5 stock expressions and a ‘moan’ to boot.

Playing Abhishek’s character in Yuva or Guru is beyond SRK’s capability as an actor. He might have the experience, he’s just incapable of bringing a range of emotions. Abhishek hasn’t nearly exploited the role in Guru mind you, but it was far better than any of SRK’s film put together. That role had a lot of potential, Kamal Hassan would tell you, after all you’re living a character from 25 to 50 and that gives an actor a lot of scope.

I’m waiting for SRK to get older, until he can afford to romance he’ll be in the reckoning but once that’s over can he pull a Nishabd like Mr. Bachchan did?
Nishabd is perhaps the best film technically to come out of RGV banner. Too bad the audience had a thick skull to understand it. But it’s by far one of the best performance from our living legend. I never understood the fuss they made about Black, watch him emote Nishabd.

Oh, by the way, you did get the last one right. Guru is Abhishek’s best performance so far.

Time is cruel .It hasn’t spared the best of them. That is why when the rolling of dice of time/ luck is on our side, one should always remember that it is not going to be the same forever. If we remain detached to everything, then only we can adjust when time is not with us. MAN KA HO TO ACCHA , NAA HO TOH ZYADA ACCHA. Sir, now that I have your blogs, I wanna read more and more of you. I am sure (and this blog has proved it beyond doubt!) that you have the best genes of the the great legendary Harivanshrai Bachchan. You must consider writing (if you at all have any time left!).

And for the post where u mentioned about charity, I sincerely hope that honest people like you start something of this kind. I have always wanted, but could never trust most of these organizations in our country and have mostly ended up donating to some UN Charity. The NRI people really want to do something, if there could be credibility and honesty in the charity. If it comes from you, it would be so much easier to have faith that it is used for a right cause.

    Dearest Big B,

Wao! Yeh hui na baat – Huh.
………………………………………………………………………TO EVERYONE ONE: Laud and clear………………………………………………………………..

    1. We ‘Indians’ simply love Amitabh Bachchan – regardless of any bad or good or whimsy media vibes.
    2. He is the only greatest and versatile ‘ACTOR’ and human being alive today in India and we are proud of that fact that we are living in his lifetime. Anyone Disagree ?..Please tell us your definition of greatness ? We would like to know.
    3. He is a very humble and loving human being. Masses connects to him easily and so does he…! Where do you see such intensity and quality. He is simply magnanimous.
    4. He is a true role model of ethics and family values ! No-one appears to have reached any closer to these qualities being a celebrity.
    5. He is just like water…that benefits everything and everyone in any form – You talk competition – water is not a competitor to anything. It’s ‘the only thing’ and he is exactly that in every Indian’s life.
    6. Enormously Inspirational – Before Amitabh Bachchan, who did you see so mesmerizing even at the age of 66. Who did you see exuding this energy and liveliness.
Today his ‘SIXTIES’ are encouraging enough to make even 40 plus stars feel in their twenties and thirties..!!! and still they can hope for many years of stardom ahead ! without thanking him as a role model for them…Sour but as true as truth..! He is the only person who has redefined the AGE ! Thank him for this little wonderful BIG thing.
    7. Indian love him like millions of sons and daughters love their only mother ! He enjoys the same love and affection from the masses that only “Bapu” commanded and no one else in India. Need to hear more ? Come on keep yelling…
    8. Finally - British took away our Kohinoor…no regrets…Amitabh Bachchan is the best filler for that ! He is nothing less than a KOHINOOR ! And he is proving it with élan and quite eloquently time and again.
    9. Nothing can stop this son of Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan who had pumped enough fuel in him before being heavenly…

What I have written is nothing as Mr. Bachchan’s persona is like an ocean – and definitely will take more than 10 million blogs to cover !!!

We read everything that media says. Many questions they pose to Amit Ji are really funny! Many issues they raise are simply meaningless and I believe he has a lot of patience to answer these questions. We can’t tolerate this perhaps if this comes to us…but Amit Ji..as he is extraordinary human being. NOT even a single question or issue raised by media appears unique or new in any sense ! Every time the media guys – ok journalists, are posing the very same questions the answers of which are known to WHOLE world in advance already ! Surprising! They try to simply en-cash the NAME ‘Amitabh Bachchan’ and they very well know the importance and lucrative value of his name in THEIR business. Come on…celebrate him…like your breath…Amitabh Bachchan and breath are both rare and precious like gems.

Yes, Sir, your ‘collie accident’ blog was very touching - Actually, I wanted to hear on your accident from you though we knew some partially. But, you ICU narration was really heart bumping and took exactly to ICU where you were exactly 26 years ago.
I heard about your accident on radio, when I was in 4th standard. We use to hear songs of ‘Collie’ on radio and in-between, about your accident and health improvement news. I still remember, the whole India was like standstill and united and concerned and open mouthed and so…on and about your well being. As a little child- I used to prayer for you, you were this connected to me then…and ‘this’ connected to me now as well ! How can a person make such a huge difference, why everyone connects to you even without really seeing you in person…amazing ! and you say that ‘people will forget me in some years or even before’ ! Never…no one think so, disagree completely…Of course with you.

Oh yes - sometime ago you said that you will be writing about your former colleagues & co-stars and your relationship with them - Please, we are waiting to hear from you - specially on ↓

Finally - your female co-stars specially your relations with ‘Rekha Ji” (I guess, everyone would love to hear on this on this blog). You recognised the standing of Mr Bharat Bhusan at a bus stop as humaliting without assessing his mental state, probably he could have a proud feeling of being an ordinary person. This is a beautiful feeling , probably may not be able to recognise the same.

You have mention the seeing of a towering hero and mentioning it here is only to come out of a guilt that you didnt stop there. We all human being do this a number of times in a day.You dint stop there hardly a matter The question to you, What you did after that? only writing it in a blog. This is not your personality. You must have given him a CAR next day if you were really in pain, Mr Bachan , you canm do that with a simple exercose of 16 muscles of your body to pass the instructions for that. You are from UP a soil of great Brother hood, How dare you to forget the very first lesson of mankind to present someone with a gift he never expected. Words are not enough, A driver and ia car is a need of an hour for that. He must be happy and shall remain happt but you will live with a guilt of not helping him since you recognised him. !! ABOUT THE UNFORGETTABLE TOUR 2008 !!

Please consider Atlanta,GA location in USA because it is the biggest center for southeast USA and can cover all southeast states.

There are lots of Indians( and south Asians) in southeast USA and most concerts come here and always do well.

There is no nearby location for your concert. All locations are very far from here like New York,Atlantic City,Houston,Los Angeles,San Francisco, chicago etc.

So please consider Atlanta,GA,USA so the concert evenly spread out in the USA.

But the magnetism of the city is so powerful i still can’t get her out of my system. Now i am so far away from it that it seems beyond my reach to get a glimpse of the city again.

The tour that you are conducting is going to be the most awaited and popular tour till now. i was in Atlantic city a couple of days ago walking on the Boardwalk thinking i wouldn’t be able to make it for the concert. well thats how life goes. Sometimes one has to let their desires drift away. i believe there would be other times.

“Attention is an elixir. When it is not available you shrink. A desolate traveler in search of that oasis in a turbid desert. But you never find it. An inviting mirage keeps beckoning. Only to disappoint. And then you perish.”

got me off gaurd. Made me realize what i am doing to myself. I can’t let my parents, my husband and my yet to be born child down. I pitied myself to self destruction. But i realized now there is a lot to think about and do still.

But people will get only what the deserve and how much they have worked for it.

i would like to thank you again for sharing your experiences which made me learn if not a lot then at least something today.

thank you and wish you the best of luck for your endeavours

    Tahnk You Sir,
“HUM” indeed I remember as a child dying to watch the film. Jumma Chumma was a craze of the nation then.
It was the first time ever a kiss was mentioned in the song. Was considered a rather bold song at that time. I guess. I was too small to judge all t hose things.
I would rather think about watching amitabh bachchan, Govinda who happened to my one of my fav. at that point of time.
Great song, Great movie. I had like it a lot

Very shocked to find the a person by stature of Bharat Bhushan was standing in a bus queue. That is not shocking but sine he went unnoticed was more shocking.
I hope the industry takes up the issue and recognized and financially secures the future retirement of yesteryears actors who continue to live dismissal lives.
Very heart breaking. People of your generation would be in tears reading this.
I m 31 {less than half your age}. I am moved at the plight of the yesteryears actors. It seems they were in the industry at the wrong time. They should have been in today where multi million rupees contracts are a in thing, happening almost every day.

But Sir, what about global warming. I see numberous programs on Discovery & Nat Geo channel. My 10 year old daughter is concerned about it.

    Dear Amitji,

Your thoughts on the harsh realities in an artist’s life in his later years brings tears to eyes.I would blame our people to certain extent when they do not extend their helping hands to such ‘once upon a great artist’ and who brought so much happiness in the lives of many by their art.But then the reality is harsh. It can be very scary for anyone to think of old age and lack of care and love.Maybe the film industry can also do something concrete about ageing artists.

Your ‘Jumma Chumma’ was super and will always remain like that in memory.

Good luck for the upcoming tour,

    Dear Sir,

that eerie location seems to have steered your thoughts to a rather melancholic post.

“Attention is an elixir.” Of course it is.
But, “when it is not available you shrink” ?

Pardon me for saying so, you get more of that elixir on every single day than any other of us during all of our lives, and none of us others perishes because we don’t get all tat attention.

In my opinion, what matters isn’t anonymous attention from the crowds, but that of people you love and cherish. The crowd may always find a new heartthrob, but your friends and family will remain at your side.

Not counting several hundred fans commenting on every of your blog posts…

Maybe another, less derelict location, and the notes of a more joyful song will help you to snap out of that plaintive mood. :)

    Love and regards,

Hello Amit uncle, yet another beautiful story. I think this whole piece can be made into a film if there is an excellent writer out there. I know you are way too busy hence you may not be interested but i certainly feel that this piece can absolutely be turned into a movie with more elaboration of course.

I think part of the reason why stars are soooo crave for attention or behave the way some do is because deep down they feel that this “attention” or “adulation” is temporary. who knows which new star will steal the thunder down the road so i must make full use of this chance that i’m getting right now…and in doing so, sometimes celebrities go overboard or misuse their status.

    Dear Sir,
This is not for you but for Mr. Pandey, our great Indian leader in making…..

Dear Mr. Pandey, jai Hind, you seems to be very annoyed on that school’s development, you also commented that Mr. Bachhan is faking. The way you have written the message it shows how dignified you are and how real you are. Have you ever thought how many problems India has been been facing or say your state UP has been facing. Are you concerned about all those? Have you ever raised voice like this anywhere? Probably not, if you would have done that we would have got a good leader from UP named Mr. Pandey. I don’t know your intention to attack Mr. Bachchan, but you could have asked Mr. Bachchan in a more dignified way the status of the school. By the way do you have any connection with any of the political parties there? or are you being influenced by someone? We even don’t know whther you are really Mr. Pandey or Mr. Ahooja or Mr. X, Y , Z… as people hardy reveal their real name. But I must tell you there is some proper way to conduct yourself in a common platform which you have violated and that portrays a very bad picture of yours. My dear Mr. Pandey. It is good to know that you are so much concerned, and for your kind information I hope you know what is the use of Blogging, and it shows you read each and every details of this blog, so if you don’t like whatever Mr. Bachchan writes, why do you waste your time in reading this, instead you can engage yourself in some social activities. Mr. Pandey, Mr. Bachchan is an actor first not a social worker, we know him as an artist not as a social worker, I think you are quite confused on that. Now what Mr. Bachchan will do on his social responsibilites it is totally upto him. If media covers all his activities, you are free to ignore those coverages and follow what other eminent socail activists are doing for this country. There are lot of good works are being done by lots of NGOs, do you take care of keeping track of those? I guess no. So my humble request to you please stop reading this blog if don’t like it, invest your precious time in some good work. May god bless you.

Thanks you Sir, I hope you didn’t mind, somehow I felt very bad the way Mr. Pandey conducted himself in this forum.

What a masterpiece this blog entry is! Your humilty is incredible, as always!!

Sir, you are adored by your followers not because they know that you know the nuances of ‘living’, loud and clear. They do because they know that you could also explain to them (even to the uninitiated amongst your countless followers) what you know, so lucidly. A rare gift. We cherish. Thank you. Thank you, God.

I know (from recent media reports dealing with elections of trustees) that there are a few associations for the welfare of cineartistes in need; specially those that are past their prime. A question. Do such associations accept aid from non ‘industrywallahs’? It would be wonderful if they did.

Perhaps it is difficult for cineartistes to accept aid from people who had been fans of their creative work, and the very same people who had put them on a pedastal when the going was great! I understand the dilemma. No wonder industry’s welfare associations don’t publicise themselves to non ‘industrywallahs’.

But surely, voluntary and non-specific contribution, at least monetary, could be made on a non-disclosure basis to such wlefare associations by non ‘industrywallahs’. Other forms of contribution would obviously be more apparent.

Perhaps a little push and nudge by the right people in the industry, including yourself Sir, would make us, the non ‘industrywallahs’, feel a part, even if very insignificant, of the great Indian film industry. So let’s make ‘living’ a pleasant experience for the senior and needy members of fraternity. One for all; all for one?

I could feel the pathos of your post. The blog made me cry. It happens in every field. A person when retires have to face the fact of life, they are void of all the facilities they enjoyed when they were employed. Reminds me of “Diminishing Return”.
I think the new generation of actors are smarter and knows how to invest for the future. Many actors of 40s and 50s had the same fate as Late Bharat Bhusan .
When I was reading your blog I thought of the scenes of “ Kaagez Ke Pool” and there it was at the end . The song “ Waqt ne kiya …….” applies to all not only to actors, directors and producers. It is a great movie.
I always remained a fan of your good acting through out your roller coaster ride, I loved your movie “Suryavansh ” in both the roles . A true fan is never fickle, I am a fan of yours from’ Saathindustani ” till now . I must confess that I did not see all your commercial movies but all movies, which I felt the director brought out the best in you.
Thank you once again for such a moving post. I pray and wish god gives you enough strength to endeavor whatever comes your way. At the same time, pray you never go through that painful path.
I was not aware of film rolls being used as bangles! Your comment “Somewhere in there…….. lost in time ” made me realize about your depth of feelings.

Moving notes. Especially about the backdrop of the textile mill - once humming with excitement and now a forlorn shadow of its past glory.

About the other frightening thoughts - how true and so many have been even more tragic than Bharat Bhushan. I have a question though - why should the other side of the hill become the wrong side - I think somewhere it’s very individualistic - how people react to the ups and downs, the pinnacle and the nadir. But again, easier said than done - for someone who is not a celebrity, I find it difficult to probe the question deeper.

I have had the privilege of having interacted with some great individuals of reel life who have seen the obvious in their oblivion with natural ease. And even if they shed a tear or two, that’s wrapped in a delightful layer of humour.

Vijay Anand was one such guy - I had spoken to him a couples of weeks before his demise - and congratulated him for his unforgettable performance in Kora Kagaz - he was so down-to-earth, no cynicism, no regret, no gospels, nothing - just a simple Thank You.Amidst all that hell he went through during his last days.

Shammi Kapoor is another gem of a guy - when it comes to talking of his yesteryears. And very observant of the recent trends in cinema. Again, not a trace of bitterness in acknowledging the current crop - only studied evaluation.

I have also had to suffer the wrath of some full-of-oneself individuals who have lost their head at whatever little they have achieved. The names are a disgrace. No point mentioning.

Would love to know more of your thoughts and experiences.

    Warm regards

    Hello Amitabh Saheb,
I did not write any coment for some time but back now. Read many of your blogs I missed out…..today’s entry was quite revealing. This reminds us the fact the TIME does not wait for anyone…..not even celebrities..no matter how BIG or small they are…. the case of Bharat Bhushan proves the point…..he was a well known actor and now……standing in queue waiting for the bus to take him to his destination……TIME IS THE GREATEST FORCE on this earth…..I wish you had stopped and sent your driver to tell Mr. Bharat Bhushan that you want to take him to his destination…..I understand that if you had gone urself, it might have created a stampade…but your driver could have done the work….anyway it is your decision and you may have thought out well….

i HAVE READ more than two times that if Mr. Dilip Kumar did not get award for the film GANGA JAMUNA then no actor should get disappointed if he / she did not get an award for his performance. AGREED. I was wondering as to why have you not ruled out your name from AWARD NOMINATIONS just like Ms. Lata Mangeskar did? She knew she would get the award because no one was / is even close to her talent-wise….I can bet my life that majority of cinegoers agree that you are the best actor of hindi cinema since 70’s and there is no one who can match your acting abilities till date. So why do you let your name get nominted for certain film every year? Even though we audience would love to nominate you for best actor / supporting actor award every year but you are way up compared to the likes of SRK, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar etc. Don’t you feel embarrased to be competing with these newbies??? Next year we might see your name - for Sarkar Raj - competing with SRK, Hritik Roshan, Abhishek or even Salman Khan for bext actor? What pleasure you derive in beating out these actors? THE FACT IS THAT YOU ARE MUCH ACTOR THAN THEM. You yourself say audience recognition is more satisfying that so called awards….so why you want to compete for best actor with SRK, Hritik, Akshay or so-called Salman? Please think about it and let us know why? I doubt if you get satisfaction by edging out Abhishek for best actor / supporting actor…..Almost all movie lovers know for a fact and acknowledge that you are the BEST Hindi cinema has to offer. And you along with Kamal Hassan, Nasiruddin Shah, Om Puri and Mohan Lal are the best Indian cinema has to offer.
Please let us know if you ever thought of ruling out your name from Award nominations? I would love to read your opinion on this.

He is Hollywood’s top most bankable star. I know that you are married and would only want to do certain movies in line with your married status ( that is no love scenes ). However you can do a comedy movie or for that matter any movie with Will Smith that does not require you to romance him. Hitch was one good example - where the character of Allegra Cole played by Amber Valletta would have been perfect for you. She played a model. The romance part went to Eva Mendes. IT’S BECAUSE WE BUY THE TICKETS- THEIR MOVIES RUN…ITS BECAUSE WE WATCH THEIR SHOWS ON TV THEIR TRPS INCREASE AND THEY GET ENDORSEMENT DEALS….DONT YOU THINK GIVING US THE BEST IS THE LEAST THEY CAN DO TO PAY US BACK?? AND SOME OF THE BEST ACTORS IN THIS COUNTRY ARE SRK, AAMRI KHAN, AISHWARYA RAI-BACHCHAN..EVERYONE KNOWS AN SRK-ASH MOVIE OR AN AAMIR KHAN-AISHWARYA RAI MOVIE WILL 100000% BE A STUPENDOUS HIT - EVEN WITH AN AVERAGE STORYLINE AND HUMMABLE MUSIC..TRUST ME SIR…ITZ TRUE…THEN WHY NOT GIVE US THAT - THE BEST???DONT WE DESERVE IT??? ARE THE ACTORS SOO SELFISH THAT THEIR OWN EGO IS MORE IMPORTANT TO THEM THAN THE AUDIENCE’ WISHES?? JUST BECUASE SHE BORKEUP WITH SALMAN - HALF OF THE INDUSTRY REFUSES TO WORK WITH HER?????????
PEOPLE HAVE 2 REALIZE THERE WONT BE ANOTHER AISHWARYA RAI-BACHCHAN FOR DECADES..WE WOULD BE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE AN ACTRESS LIKE HER..BE IT HER BEAUTY/DANCING/ ACTING SKILLS..AND WITH EVERY PASSING DAY, WE ARE ONLY GROWING OLDER…AND IM STARTING TO FEAR THE WORST..INDIA IS A COUNTRY WHERE WE DON’T KNOW HOW TO HONOUR AND VALUE THE GREAT ONES WHEN THEY ARE ALIVE AND KICKING..ITZ ONLY AFTER ITZ TOO LATE THAT WE REALIZE THE POTENTIAL OF A PERSON..ITZ TRUE …CANT HELP IT…
I WANT YOUR OPINION ON THIS SIR..PLEASE DONT JUS PASS THE BUCK AND ASK ME TO HAVE SRK N AAMIR ANSWER THIS…UNLESS YOU THROW LIGHT UPON THIS - JUSTICE WILL NEVER BE DONE TO A GREAT ACTRESS AND A GREAT HUMAN-BEING LIKE AISHWARYA RAI-BACHCHAN..

They r news makers and what can poor Amitabh do if media decides to chase him everywhere. Being Siddhivinayak Devotee I certainly know importance of walking upto Siddhivinayak but people r people. She has all to complain abt Bachchans, so I asked her to write on your blog, she will get feedback from Big B himself. I believe that ppl shd watch their own actions b4 poining others. One man can’t change the country. Y so many high expectation from him? PPl have problem with his silence, later when he decides to speak they have hassles with that as well. Y can’t they focus on their own “Karma” and do something good for the scociety instead expecting so much from one person.

    Our dearest Mr. B.,

Your story this morning has made my day. I can see those pictures as though I’d been there myself. We’re so lucky to have you to open your world to us.

Today I’m going to look at a piano for sale. It’s a three-hour drive up the west coast of the island to Waikoloa. If it’s suitable, I’ll come home owning it, and that will be my second great joy of the day. Reading your words is the first.

    Aloha from Hawaii …

    Love, Dorothy

Ah. a very good writeup today. Sir, you praise the current generation of unlimited dynamism, but this is one thing that this generation lacks. People like Bharat Bhushan have the courage to accept the whims of fate. As i read that, i could’nt stop imagining you in the shoes of Bhushan sahab (my apologies). And from what i have known, i can only think of you ‘gracefully’ accepting the truth of life.
Our generation may not have the strengths to face that toss of life. I can only recollect the beautiful composition of ‘Bhajagovindam’ by Adi Sankaracharya. The firth stanza with the effective meaning
“So long as a man is fit and able to support his family, see the affection all those around him show. But no one at home cares to even have a word with him when his body totters due to old age.”
The simple truths of life reminded by the vedantic master more than 1000 yrs back. You can find the complete meaning here.

One way or the other, thank you for your blog sir. Atleast you make us reflect some basic facts life.

    Hello Sir

Intresting article. Time does not stop for anybody and the people of yesteryears are long forgotten and i think that is partly in effect in which our country is going. More power to the youth and the once you are old you are relegated. This has made you even more bigger in my mind because you have manged to stay at top till now and hopefully forever.
As for the Bharat Bhusan incident i wanted to ask you is there a Provident Fund kind of a thing for the leading stars of the yesteryears? i know there is a association for supporting casts but not heard about anything for the leading man or woman or music directors etc so that they dont have to die without any money in isolation due to lack of funds..There is so much money generated through movies but is there a way to give it to those you are in need as they are out of luck right now now by charity but what they rightfully deserve. That way we can pay respect to the old ones who were a part of the glorious past and in some way paid their dues to the industry.

    Thanks
    Ram

    1. SHRI AMITABH BACHCHAN JI,
I’M GLAD YOU HAVE TAKEN TO BLOGGING..I UNDERSTAND THAT AMONG OTHER THINGS LIKE CONNECTING WITH THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, YOU ARE TRYING TO PUT FORWARD THE GREAT WORKS OF YOUR POET-FATHER LATE SHRI HARIVANSHRAI BACHCHAN JI.,..NOTHING WRONG IN USING THIS MEDIUM TO INTRODUCE HIS WORK TO THE WORLD..AS A RESPONSIBLE SON, YOU MAKE YOUR FATHER EXTREMELY HAPPY WHEREVER HE IS…IM 23 AND I DONT PRETEND TO KNOW A LOT ABOUT YOUR FATHER..BUT I HAVE BEEN READING A FEW POEMS OF HIS WHICH I COME ACROSS ON THIS BLOG..AND THEY WERE GOOD..AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANKYOU AND YOU SIR, NEED TO BE APPRECIATED FOR YOUR EFFORTS..
I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE YOUR OPINION ON ANOTHER THING..AISHWARYA RAI HAS BEEN MY FAVOURITE EVER SINCE I SAW HER WIN THE CROWN IN MISS WORLD 94 CONTEST..AND FOR 14 YEARS MY LOVE AND RESPECT FOR HER HAS BEEN INCREASING..IM HAPPY FOR BOTH THE FAMILIES AS YOU DESERVED A BAHU LIKE HER AND VICE VERSA..
    BUT!!!!!
WHY DO THE PEOPLE IN THE INDUSTRY HAVE SUCH EGO..I CAN UNDERSTAND AN AISHWARYA RAI NOT WORKING WITH SALMAN FOR PERSONAL REASONS..BUT PEOPLE LIKE SHAH RUKH KHAN AND AAMIR KHAN..DONT THEY OWE THEIR SUCCESS TO THE PUBLIC????
PEOPLE HAVE 2 REALIZE THERE WONT BE ANOTHER AISHWARYA RAI-BACHCHAN FOR DECADES..WE WOULD BE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE AN ACTRESS LIKE HER..BE IT HER BEAUTY/DANCING/ ACTING SKILLS..AND WITH EVERY PASSING DAY, WE ARE ONLY GROWING OLDER…AND IM STARTING TO FEAR THE WORST..INDIA IS A COUNTRY WHERE WE DON’T KNOW HOW TO HONOUR AND VALUE THE GREAT ONES WHEN THEY ARE ALIVE AND KICKING..ITZ ONLY AFTER ITZ TOO LATE THAT WE REALIZE THE POTENTIAL OF A PERSON..ITZ TRUE …CANT HELP IT…
I WANT YOUR OPINION ON THIS SIR..PLEASE DONT JUS PASS THE BUCK AND ASK ME TO HAVE SRK N AAMIR ANSWER THIS…THEY WONT…BUT IF YU RESPOND, IT MAY ATLEAST MAKE THEM THINK ABOUT IT..UNLESS YOU THROW LIGHT UPON THIS - JUSTICE WILL NEVER BE DONE TO A GREAT ACTRESS AND A GREAT HUMAN-BEING LIKE AISHWARYA RAI-BACHCHAN..
    WARM REAGARDS,

    Good evening,

As I said earlier, you write amazingly and your ramblings are poetry. And why wouldn’t they be - you have spent years spinning dreams for all of us. But I am so glad that you have retained the ability to see the beauty, inspite of the inevitable ugliness surrounding all of us.

I think what strikes me most is your humility. That is what probably still keeps you grounded, inspite of all the adulation.

I met you years ago - at our home most nights (shooting for Ganga Ki Saugandh)and later too. And what has stayed with me is the keen attention and thoroughness with which you looked at each one of us kids ( my brother, sister and me) when we were introduced to you. My guess is that the unhurried thoroughness has held you in good stead.

My mom and dad talk very fondly of you.

    Dear Mr. Bachchan,
Ido not know when did you last time travel in a public transport in India. It is the most healthy thing for body, mind and soul. I am serious. It is invigorates your body, diverts your mind and is good for soul as you become one with so many , all so similar to you. It may look a bit clumsy and fearful to celebrities (who are advised not to attempt so lest they should be smoothered out of affection)but it promotes equanimity, objectivity, selfless self-control and thereby peace in our minds.
Dear Sir, travel in public transport is not a ’sitam’ even for a star of yesteryears. Being unnoticed or being oblivious of attention , both are similarly blissful states. Good you did not stop your car.

However I take offense to the tone of your response to Mr.Vishal Toshniwal.

While I agree with you that you cannot be held responsible for a strange person’s failed business and other such behavior, it is inappropriate to assume that Mr.Toshniwal and other “aam junta” are NOT doing their bit simply because they do not have the resources to publicize it.

I imagine the intent of his response was to highlight to you that with great power comes greater responsibility, whether you choose to talk about it in public or not.

What a strangely melancholy yet insightful post. I wish you’d do more of these. Bombay in films .. especially from the 70s is so beautiful. The roads seem wider, the sea somehow rougher, and there’s a certain breeziness to the city. I used to wonder if that was only on the silver screen, but old timers in the city have often confirmed the same. But as human beings, we hanker after “better times”. And perhaps ten years from now, some kid wills say that 2008 was the best year for the city ever.

As Alphonse Karr said …The more things change.. the more they remain the same.

    Dear Sir,

As they say, ‘All glory is fleeting’. But the ones who have managed to maintain their popularity and respect over the years have been the ones who have reinvented themselves with time. Great companies do that and continue being successful. So do great individuals in all spheres.

I do feel that Hindi cinema is not kind enough to actors who go beyond a certain age. They get typecast to play father, mother, uncle, aunty roles that are so unidimensional that they do not utilize the experience and maturity of seasoned actors. If you look at actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Paresh Rawal to name a few, they are treasure chests who can turn out riveting performances. Many actors in mainstream cinema too have been similarly under-utilized.

This can be a vicious cycle where film makers say, we dont have an audience for cinema of a ‘different’ kind. But I would say, whet the audience apetite by creating interesting characters, roles, plots and cast the best suited actor for the role…and see how the audience accepts it. In hollywood they have casting directors who map characters to actors. Do we need something similar here in India…
