Toronto,  same Hotel         July 18, 2008           9:30 am

THE BAGS ARE BACK !!

Broken open, stuff missing but back.

I am amazed at the speed with which modern communication operates. A short and insignificant mention to my readers of my condition regarding the bag loss became an issue with national media !

Inundated with media requests for details and phone ins from the electronic amuses me. Competition must be severe for them to indulge in such inanities.

Spent most of the day in press conferences and rehearsals, which ended around 2:30 am. Everything seems to be coming together, the acts the settings and the last minute excitement and energy.

But what was most moving was the visit to CNIB before all this. Canadian National Institute for the Blind a most rewarding experience. They work towards making the lives of those physically challenged a great deal more comfortable and to teach them how to lead an independent and self sufficient existence. Truly noble.

The entire tour of the premise and the work that they did was conducted by a blind individual. Remarkable.

A young lady who lost her eye sight just 2 years back and had felt distraught with her sudden condition had been taken up by the institute now trained to conduct her life, including cooking, all by herself without any human assistance. The spirit the determination and the absolute commitment of those that run the institute and the confidence with which inmates regulate and rehabilitate their lives was such an emotional moment.

They asked for me to visit the facility because they had seen ‘Black’ repeatedly and felt it was most inspiring for the kind of work they were doing. I felt honored and humbled and so touched by their gesture.

Show time today and I need to rush back to the venue, the huge and majestic Roger’s Centre, for final touch ups. The venue is an indoor outdoor sports facility for baseball and American Football, the massive roof electronically opens up when you want to see the elements and closes when you do not.

With your prayers and blessings for today -

I remain

Amitabh Bachchan

I am glad you got your bags back. I am looking forward to seeing you perform in New York City.

I remember when you toured London around 1990, you had released a 35mm print of Jooma Chooma in London for theatres in India. I saw it in a theatre in Hyderabad then. Is there anywhere I can buy the DVD version of that show, or is it available online.

    Dear Sir,

Sorry about your lost luggage. I know how you feel.
I am sure all will work out well in the end and you’ll have a great show.

Now that would truly be “Unforgettable” for me, sir!
I met you once in Miami about 12 years ago and you told me to “keep pushing and keep your dreams alive”.

Even though my career path took me deeper and deeper into engineering, I have always kept my dream alive of becoming a singer someday.
I know that the likelihood of me being able to sing one of your songs on the same stage as you are probably zip, but one can dream, right?

If you read this and you think you can grant me my wish, I would be forever grateful! Just so you don’t have the fear of putting some unknown person on the stage, I would be more than happy to audition before your July 27 show in Oakland.

    Dear Sir,
I can fully empathize with your situation. Last year when I came to US, Continental Airlines lost my luggage and when I got it back, it looked like it had been used as a substitute for football. It was a brand new before I checked it in and when i got it back , looked like it was 10 years old. On the top of that, a few “masala” containers’ lids got off because of the abuse and my clothes were all stained. The first thing I did after coming to US was to wash all those clothes and iron then again. I spent almost 1 full day in ironing, ended up with a back pain.
My suitcase still smell of those spilled spices !!! Feels like I opened up a Pickle Bottle.

    Hi Amitji,

I might be the only one delighted to know that your bags were lost and then ripped open .. rather I should say “Your bags can also be lost and rip opened”. I use to think that this happens to only common man & those who travel by economy class. I have heard stories of lost bags + lost things in cargo from friends & family and mainly on British Airways. But they didnt spare an elite celebrity and first class frequent traveler as Amitabh Bachchan. :) So you see my happiness is for knowing that they dont discriminate against economy class.

    Mr Bachchan:

I am one one of your biggest fans (more for younger days) and I have always wanted to ask you this question: As an actor you have had the greatest roles. Some of my favorites include, Jai in Sholay (by the way, just the eye contact between you & Jayaji were the most romantic scenes ever), Vijay in Deewar, Trishul & Shakti, and Vicky Baboo in Sharabhi. But in my opinion, your greatest role was Sikander in MKS, it displayed all your talents. My question is what was your favorite character/role you played in the 70s-80s?
I believe when you were on top, there is/was no actor in the world historically that could match you in terms of acting and looks. You were this mythical/mysterious figure at that time and I think you have lost that because of over-exposure recently.

  77. Daksha (Leicester UK) says:

    Sir,
I know, I believe, I say, that the good deed you did visiting the blind is called God. Some service that is performed from the heart, is blessed by those concerned from the heart. The mind or the mouth need not be used. It is felt. It is silent. That is God. God does not have to be in a human form or any other. It can be spiritual. What you did was spiritual. May these Spirits give you their blessings, in all your undertakings, whatever shape or form, today tomorrow, always. May the blessings from the blind and us all shine over you and bring you success in your tour, give you lots of mental and physical strength and conviction. You go out there and entertain but more important enjoy. You have worked hard for this day, you deserve all the adulation and love you get in return. That you will, you know it. HAVE LOTS OF FUN.

I once had a customer in my shop - deaf, dumb and blind. He was being looked after by a caretaker, they had their own particular method of communicating, using the feel of their hands. He actally understood everything the caretaker was trying to communicate to him. My husband and I were lost for words. If he has been managing his life somehow, I should never complain. I feel blessed.
    Good Luck and God Bless!

That came from the heart, need I say more?
Lots of love to all there, and affection.

    Mr dearest Mr Bachchan….

Glad to hear the luggages are now recovered.

So nice to hear about your visit to CNIB - Canadian National Institute for the Blind. I was specially touched about the Blind guide.

“A young lady who lost her eye sight just 2 years back and had felt distraught with her sudden condition had been taken up by the institute now trained to conduct her life, including cooking, all by herself without any human assistance.”

What an awful thing to have happen to her but what an awe inspiring individual to have the courage to overcome the odds and come out victorious. And she cooks by herslelf?! Amazing! And I complain about the odd difficulties I have in life?! Shame on me!

    Show time indeed…

I have sent you a few messages but they are now lost in amongst the throngs of well wishers messages. I do hope you did read them…

    Be thinking of you

I have been reading your thoughts, your experiences and sometime your emotions, which come from you, through your Blog.

Honestly, it is very difficult to address such personality as yours, but by not doing that, it would be disrespect, I shall address you as “Bachchanji”. To me this would be respecting entire family.

As I mentioned from time to time I have been logging to read your thoughts and your expressions, I did read comments from people, but could never dare to write you, unill yesterday when I meat you, at venue of CNIB. Yes,“Yesterday” is going to me one of my most memorable day of my life. Yes, I was one of the luckiest people to be physically at the venue of CNIB to take your pictures, I don’t know if you recall but somebody commended on your smile, saying “it seems you are very tired but if you could give us one smile that would be great”, And you smiled. May be that would be your normal smile, but that certainly meant a lot to me. I have almost taken 60 -70 Picture of yours which would be a memory to me for life time.

I was also present to receive you at Toronto Airport- I could see you being bit upset, as you were walking in front and Jayaji following you, but left behind- you were worried for her, but due to crowd and security you just moved forward. I infact did’t knew that Jayaji was part of this tour, until I saw her, she was covered with adorable simplicity, I wanted to greet her and say my “ Pranam” to her , but, as soon as she was sitting in your car, security pushed me back.

I wish you all the best for today’s Show. My best wishes to all of you and Good Luck.

    Wow, that was some rush-talking…in a hurry…

In all this and the excitement you probably won’t get time to read all the posts. But the way you described the Centre for the Blind, makes me wish that we could have things operating on that level in our own country, and wonder, why not? Why do we have to quickly have everything sullied by paan stains and a grime that doesn’t seem to wash off mentally and physically??!!

    Well

    Dear Mr Bachchan
I usually never do post on blogs. You touched upon somehting that I have long since thought would be a great act for you. Let me get through various thoughts before I sign off with my suggestion.
I am really glad to see someone write in the maybe quaint pedantic(?) language in today’s world.
Thanks for letting us into a part of your life …. some of your thoughts are what I hope will set some of the younger generation to appreciate what they have in terms of cultural heritage and not spurn that to ape (not embrace) the west. East is East and West is West and they shall meet in a suitably well adjusted global citizen.
I have always been very impressed with your command of the English language and ‘Shudh ‘ Hindi too. You have a resonant voice that is a joy to listen to. Now coming to my suggestion which ties in with your visit to the Blind School …. I have always felt that ‘books on tape’ - (like some of your father’s poetry that you did a few years ago }and some more Hindi novels and the like and old classical English books would be something that you are just destined for. Now with the podcast being so easy …. please do consider it… it will be a great contribution to the arts and a pleasure to the listener.
    Thanks for you time.
    With Best Wishes

You truly truly are a breath of fresh air. Having been exposed to the insides of the film industry, I’ll admit that I was disgusted with the sheer existence of shallowness, lack of character, and above all that, the sickly sweet cover-up portrayed. I base all that, not on rumors, but on solid personal evidence being a bystander for a few months in Bombay and in the “social circuit”. I applaud you and your family for the impressive intellect, hardwork and above all, the humility.

There is a large world that we don’t know exists. The blind have a world like that, a place where only darkness exists at first, and you seen no colours, but soon a new world is born where you see everything through your hands and your touch! A wonderful world that is so unknown to us. There is another world that is known only to people in a wheel chair, a world where you see the world from another level as everybody else, you see things others don’t. Another world is that of mentally challenged people, their world is probably the most beautiful of all. It is somehow so peaceful everytime to see their faces as they have a smile on it. A world that we shall never get to know. A pity that our world is so limited. Its only when we actually close our eyes, that we open ourselves to imagination and creativity where nothing is limited, each object can have different colours, can be something that the mind imagines.
We are blessed to have people between us that have the ability to see the world in a way that we cant. Maybe we are missing things that we don’t even know truly exist!

Take care, hope all is fine with your family and yourself,

    Love, Krupali

heard about the story of your new movie. My father has a library now after my mom died. she had brain damage & suffered for 5 years. my father missed her when she was gone. your story seems very much similar to my fathers life. It is tough for a man to live without his wife after spending 30 years together!
Both of my fathers “son”s are not in India & not helping him for anything.
I think you put the name of your movie as “O” as it has no meaning without “m” -stands for mother (a complete woman in a mans life) & when you put them together it has a meaning (which you can explain better)

    Dear Mr. Amitabh,

I don’t have the guts to tell you what What one Chintu said .I believe when you were on top, there is/was no actor in the world historically that could match you in terms of acting and looks. You were this mythical/mysterious figure at that time and I think you have lost that because of over-exposure recently.

Yes it was due to over exposure. If you have a look at the bench mark of flops “RGV’s AAG” your performance was superb.Mohanlal and Sushmita were also excellent.Though good at acting Ajay Devgan and Nisha Kothari failed due to over acting as well as various lacunaes in the way their screenplay was wrote.Abhishek and Urmila had done full justice to their roles.

This is not with your films. Take the recent most talked one “love story-2050″. Anyhow, bygones are bygones.
