A Hotel, the name of which appears in some Mumbai papers, Los Angeles, USA

July 25, 2008           7:50 am

So many get well wishes so many prayers so many cure ideas…so many responses !!

I am overwhelmed and grateful. Thank you for everything that you do for me. I can never sufficiently pay back this debt to you. Have not been able to since my accident in 1982 and the prayers that went up. It is a burden that I carry. A happy burden. A burden with a lot of weight. I like it.

Sometimes when I visit the mountains and see the porters at bus and train terminals carrying the weight of the luggage of passengers, I worry on their condition. Or on the condition of those that carry the palki for them that cannot climb hill roads at great heights. It is inhuman for me; an earning for them. So much dichotomy in life.

I pilgrimaged to Kedarnath some few years back. With faith, with religiosity, with belief and strength of prayer I attempted to climb the last 13 to 14 kilometers of steep climb just before reaching the temple. I could not. My myasthenia and asthmatic condition, my multiple stomach surgeries, just would not allow me to. After a short trying distance I was put on a pony, but closer to the divinity human power was deployed. I succumbed initially, but was too embarrassed to continue and got off, suffered my limitations, fought off my disability and managed. The Almighty doesn’t make it easy for you to reach HIM !!

I would wish for the burden of others to be on me. I would not, that mine be on them. I can build my own burdens; of gratitude, of perceived burdens of friendship and association, of allegiance and loyalty. These I contend with happily. But your burden of prayer and consideration, of your love and care, I carry happily, but fill myself with remorse at not being able to pay it back.

So thank you again for your concern for my health.

And to justify how sincerely I follow your instructions, I post you a picture from my bed. This is what I see in front, to my right and to my left…throughout the day ! Hopefully with prayer the picture will change. To a stage maybe and happy faces of an audience !! Hopefully !!

The burden of your love firmly on my shoulders, I remain -

Amitabh Bachchan

PS : VATSALA UPADHYAYA - I have noted and read each one of your Gandhigiri responses ! But I have not been able to find a solution. Maybe if you couriered this ’star certificate’ to me it would be the best option. The frantic pace of our travel and activity will not help in what you are desiring - a personal meeting. Love and thank you. AB

PPS: NOTICE, IN PHOTOS - HEAD STILL FIRMLY UNDER DUVET !! THE WHITE LUMPS ARE ALL DUVET MOSTLY COVERING TOES !!

Thank you for posting what you could see from your bed as you recuperate, in pictures! Technology savvy you are, aren’t you? Nice images - sure they could be better - will be better much before you hit the stage. The show must go on. Kind Regards, Neeraj

Dear Big B: Hope you have a quick recovery..

Please pass some words of advice to the young generation. What is your key to success..How much of it comes from maintaining a good regiment in life wrt to exercise, meditation, focus..Have you always been focused; or has it improved over time..Do you think being a good person takes you to the top in life or you become the guinny pig…describe yourself in 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s wrt to your focus on your goals..You are a fatherly figure; well atleast for me as you share the same year as my dad’s DOB..and share the same DOB as my 1 year son..

Read that you walk the streets of LA; would be walking the streets of NY? ..not fair if you don’t..:-)..Take Care.

  25. Ghunoo says:

    Dear Amit Uncle,

Get well soon. I have been at home a good part of the last 5 days, just trying to recuperate from the fever and the flu. Tis the season, so I cannot say that any indian medicines will be of any help. This is just what it is. It catches everyone here, either you have it earlier in the season and will not suffer from it, or you have it later in the season. The earlier the better- which means that you have immunity for the rest of the season.

Yes, the name did appear in the Indian newspapers. I hope that the adoring fans do not mob the outskirts of the hotel. You all, get precious few days in your life to be just ordinary citizens roaming about the streets, so I will not take that away from you. We each have our own luxuries and I would not like to rob you of yours.

I am glad you saw Dark Knight, I had recommended that movie in the earlier post. I am very curious to know what you thought of Heath Ledger and the Joker’s role. ……………………………………….

Anyways, My advice - please do not strain yourself for the concert. Do not take this cold lightly, it gets the better of everyone here. I am sure the fans value your health more than the idea of you straining yourself through this flu on the stage. Maybe Abhishek can step up here.

So from your last blog piece, it looks like you have been to Santa Monica. I have always wondered - Are Artists wired differently than us - the ubiquitous doctors and engineers in India. What motivates the street performers to pursue their craft and live in less when they could enjoy the comforts of a blue collar job and a salary. I know in India, many street children you see performing, do not have a choice, but here they do. These artists that you see in LA still perform and without any expectation, knowing fully well, that fickle people will rarely appreciate their talent enough to open their hearts and their wallets. So what motivates them, knowing fully well that their chances of success are 1 in Million, about the same as a million dollar lottery or maybe worse.

So are the artists wired differently???????????????? What do you think?………………………

Anyways, take your time and rest adequately. The flu here is deadly and I remind you again, not to stress yourself. I know, you will try to persevere despite your health and all its failings and for that, I wish you were not so brave, atleast not this time.

    Best regards,

    Ghunoo

    Hi Amitji,
I hope you are feeling better. I have an unusual request for you, Since my wife is 7 months pregnant she cannot come to the show in Chicago, we wanted to know if you can share time you be arriving in Chicago or hotel you be staying? She just wants to see your family and take a picture, if possible.
Now that’s an unusual craving I have to fulfill, besides going to Taco Bell at mid-night which is achievable.

    Hiya Big B,

I traveled to Egypt in the month of July. The moment I sat foot in Cairo, I was greeted with “You Indian?” Promptly I said yes and the next sentence was “Amitabh Bachchan”. I just smiled and acknowledged his knowledge about yourself. The next few days was just hilarious. Every where I went, it was just one sentence “Amitabh Bachchan” and whether I knew you. A taxi driver even went to the extent of telling me that he knew you and drove you around Cairo. I was amazed to learn that majority of the Egyptians know you and have seen most of your films. You are the greatest ambassodor India has.

My good wished for your fast recovery.

We pray for your speedy recovery. Just wanted to know what did you feel about Heath Ledgers character in Dark Knight.
I was moved by his death and now after watching Dark Knight i feel we lost a savant actor. I wish bollywood could make more movies which can be more thought provoking, more intellectual, which can question our values. To cut the big story short i wish bollywood to make movies which makes people introspect when the end credits roll. Let us know your thoughts on it.

    Hello Amitji,

Wish You A Very Healthy Life ahaed & hope you GET WELL SOON before the upcoming concert in Los Angeles.

    Amitji,

Apart from your acting skills I also adore you for your oratory & writing skills. God know, so many times I have had to open a dictionary & find its meaning/synonym and then I could relate what you are saying. This in turn, has helped people like me to shapren our English speaking & writing skills. Not that we do not know proper English & cannot communicate in English. But your English usage takes ours to a different level which is “higher” and we would have got ONLY while working with CEOs/COO of corporate conglomerates. Although I am an ardent fan of yours, to be honest with you, I read your blog more to grasp new words & their usage. I can very simply, call you my English Teacher from my school in Mumbai.

I was reading one of your blogs about the prices of the tickets for your concerts in the US of A. And you clarified that the prices have been decided, not by you, but by the promoters of the show.
$750, will be the amount 80 odd fans will be paying to sit in the VVIP area for watching your show. And as I hear from the promoters at Atlantic City in New Jersey, the first 60 or 70 members will also be privileged to have a picture session with you apart from having dinner in the same room as yours.

I will be the 80th or 81st member in the VVIP area. And the promoters say only first 60 or 70 members will be having a photo session with you & other stars.
Amitji, I was just wondering when a middle class man like me, is also paying $750 to watch your concert, why can’t he too, get an opprtunity to have a picture session with you as well?
I can understand that it’s humanly not possible for you & other stars to have photo session with all. So, the first 60-70 members. Agreed! But why take the same price amount from remaining members too?
Still, I will go ahead & pay $750 in HOPE of having a photo session with you for a minute and test my LUCK. It will be a dream come true. I just pray & hope that you understand that there are few others left out who pay the same amount as others, to have a photo shoot with you. In this context, request you to extend the member limit for 20 more odd people which is just EXTRA 20 minutes for you. The promoters of the show will definitely acknowledge your request.

Hope you recover soon & get back on stage for all us fans who eagerly await your LIVE CONCERT.
    Hurray!!!!

P.S:- I have compiled the list of words I found from your blogs which I had to look into dictionary. I hope to get the list autographed by you one day.

Talkin about why the Almighty doesnt make it easy for us to reach Him.. If that were not so one would not have the experience of reaching.. The exhilaration.. The awakening!

If one was already there, the mystery & the longing would all disappear!

If a current flows through a light bulb that has no resistance, it will not glow.. It would be one big zero of darkness!

So the resistance to reaching the Almighty has a purpose.. To light up the world with His energy! Bring Heaven on Earth!

    Dear Mr Bachchan

So glad you saw “Mamma Mia” and those plucky Brits (plus diva Meryl Streep) in the closest they will ever come to a Bollywood (apologies) musical.

I trust you and Abhishek won’t be losing too much sleep over the “competition”, having seen Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth trying to be song-and-dance men!

But the girls love them for having the nerve to get up and make fools of themselves. Did you cry when Meryl sung “The Winner Takes It All?” Like most of the females in the audience, I did. Ah, what is to love, and lose…

You were just beginning to enjoy the streets of LA and being able to walk freely without getting mobbed (btw how does that feel), and you got sick. In any case, get well soon, and I am really keen to know what you thought about Dark Knight because in my opinion it’s the best superhero film I’ve seen.

It will bring such joy in your life. As I’m mentioned, there’s mostly “Gora’s” that visit this place so you won’t be bothered by Indians.

  59. Angelica says:

Caring about you is no burden — and you do give back to us by brightening our lives with all that you produce and indeed your very presence. All others once dear to my own heart are now passed on, so although my little four-pawed menagerie brings me unconditional love and happiness, greater access to you has brought extra joy and warmth into daily life. For this, I love you and thank you deeply.

Glad you are finally taking it easy — as the physician reader pointed out, it is probably the 36-48 hour virus plaguing CA at present, which should pass quickly with appropriate rest. As another also emphasized, your immune system is very likely compromised (hardly surprising ), a condition that mainstream medicine does not address as effectively as naturopathic or integrative medicine.

Your anecdote of the pilgrimage says much about your character — your search for balance is underlain by an iron will and proactivity is well within your abilities. Nevertheless, I recognize that professionally two dilemmas pertain. First, the films that many of us (including the Western critics) consider ‘quality cinema’ are judged to be “rubbish,” “worthless,” and a wrong choice by many of your long-time fans in India (sadly, that is how I decide to buy the DVD sight unseen). Shakespeare, of course, managed to appeal to two completely different audiences simultaneously, but few others have succeeded in doing so. Secondly, for a while, India itself forgot that Amitabh Bachchan was Amitabh Bachchan, and as we your contemporaries know, career and financial setbacks, albeit enhancers of courage, are especially daunting in the later years and must inevitably color subsequent decisions. Add to this your self-confessed Libran ‘indecision’ and lack of self-confidence (no-one can accuse Amitabh Bachchan of having “ever slenderly known himself”:-), and I see no other remedy but to gently encourage you to proactively dare more to the resolve you display reactively when challenged. Even your own instincts seem to be telling you it may be time.

With deep love always and prayers for a full and speedy recovery.

    Mr Bachchan Sir:

I am one one of your biggest fans (more for younger days) and I have always wanted to ask you this question: As an actor you have had the greatest roles. Some of my favorites include, Jai in Sholay (by the way, just the eye contact between you & Jayaji were the most romantic scenes ever), Vijay in Deewar, Trishul & Shakti, and Vicky Baboo in Sharabhi. But in my opinion, your greatest role was Sikander in MKS, it displayed all your talents. My question is what was your favorite character/role you played in the 70s-80s?
I believe when you were on top, there is/was no actor in the world historically that could match you in terms of acting and looks. You were this mythical/mysterious figure at that time and I think you have lost that because of over-exposure recently.

    Mr Bachchan

have you read about the problem at Katrina Kaif’s party between Salman and Shah Rukh? well, according to sources and witnesses, Shah Rukh made a comment about AishwarYa that offended Salman.Salman retaliated and was very angry about the comment. That tells me that Salman still has feelings for Aishwarya, well considering their history together, its natural isn’t it. i think there are still feelings on his part and probably on hers too, i mean why would she not want him on her tour since she is, as she so often reiterates, a ‘professional’. would it not have been good for the show itself, i mean come on, let bygones be bysones, Salman is the great Salman Khan after all, as is Shah Rukh. they mean no harm, they are massive stars and i dont believe for a second anyone is there to bring your show down, or malign you in anyway…….

by the way, the greatest GREATEST STAR OF THE SHOW?????? MADHURI DIXIT. HOW CAN ANYONE COME CLOSE TO HER POSITION! THE BEST MADHURI!

wish a speedy recovery for you. india may be much larger in population than pakistan but i strongly believe that percentage wise more people will like u here (in pakistan). in coolie when u got injured every one in our family who have a concern with films prayed for u. and they tell me that every one (virtually all pakistan) seemed to be worried for your condition. sir they were not of your religion , predominintly muslims but prayed and wished for u. so anything that happens like why i am successful and others are not or whats in me that others dont have is because HE is God for all of us not just for a particular faith or religion. HE d

    Mr. Bachchan,
I would love to get your views on Mr. Khalid Mohammed’s reviews on Hindustantimes.com. I was reading his review on Mission Istanbul today and can’t help but think that this poor man is losing his marbles more and more with each passing Friday.
He seems to think that he is a comedian trapped in a journalist’s body. I cant understand if his writing is meant to criticise the movie he is reviewing or is it a subliminal message he is sending us of the disdain in which he holds his profession.
He needs to make up his mind if he wants to be a serious reviewer of an art form or a failed comedian.

    Dear Mr. Amitabh Bachchan,

I am an expatriate and spend my free time in reading non-fictions, autobiographies, travelogues and books on general knowledge. I also write a lot. I collect stamps, coins, telephone cards, etc.

I am very proud to say that I have signed photos and letters from celebrities whom I admire, including Hollywood stars, viz, Charlton Heston, Sophia Loren, Ben Kingsley, Denzel Washington, Robbin Williams, Tony Curtis, Halle Berry, Jacqueline Bisset, Yvonne De Carlo, etc., etc. In fact, I enjoy watching Hollywood films, because they can create a film on any topic and those films are well crafted and some of them get an entry into international film festivals all over the world, which is not the case with Bollywood stuff.

I would like to know from you as to whom do you consider the greatest actors and actresses, both in Hollywood and Bollywood. They could be present or past.

When I talk about Bollywood stars, I mean stars who have put up memorable roles like say, “Mother India”, “Mughal-E-Azam”, “Saraswati Chandra” and not mere “nach gana” roles that churned out by Bollywood in container loads.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I take this opportunity to wish you all the best.

    Sincerely,
    Nelson

  120. Soma Chaudhuri says:

    Dear Mr Bachchan,

Hope you are feeling better today…. among all the suggestions and advice you have received until now, your wife is perhaps most practical in saying you need to stay away from the computer. Sitting in front of the monitor is really not the right thing to do especially when fever takes over the cells of your body. And to add to that you definitely have the age factor…. So, get some rest…. get enough rest…. dont worry if you do not dance on the stage. People would be more than happy to hear you just talk. Just make an appearance. Fever is always just a symptom…. so check with best doctors (i am sure you must be already doing).

You must be hearing such things everyday….. but the best thing about your blogging is the spontaneity, humility and use of good language. Keep it going but not at the cost of your health!

PS: Its really sweet of you to post those pictures…. maybe you could have added one of yourself too ! A real off screen one! Everyone will save it their computer :-)

    Best wishes,
    Soma
