New York, NY  USA             August 17, 2008/ writing for August 16th          1:40 pm

It turned out to be our most emotional evening at the last show in USA - New York !!

Well actually, Long Island, New Jersey and the entire surrounding area, which, those that live here know better it is not truly NYC. Its like performing in Thane and saying Mumbai. Close enough to be called Mumbai in general terms, but actually Thane ! Thats the closest example or near to an example that I can give.

It rained, there were thunderstorms, lightening and pouring water, but they came in their hundreds ! Thank you so much. Another packed stadium. I believe the promoters had to put in extra row of seats to accommodate people on the floor of the house at rather exorbitant rates and some of those that we met after the show told us that the atmosphere outside the stadium was much like the first day of a blockbuster release film in India. Black marketing in tickets !!

The audience wet from the drive in and into their seats were just a little hesitant for the first 10-15 minutes into the show, but as the event flowed they warmed up into the most exited audience that we witnessed in the entire USA. Though some of the group did feel Chicago was still the best !!

I do not know what it was, but everyone was simply on a different level. Improvising, doing that extra bit, reaching out. What a difference the audience reactions make to a show.

Jaya and I had our additional moment. I could not help but get more personal emotionally on my dialogue portion. Just such an involved evening. And then the after show meet. The cast and crew getting together late night at about 2 am. And every one doing a take off on each other and the fun and the laughter and the back slapping and leg pulling. Marvelous atmosphere. And an apt ending to the US leg.

What was most unusual was finding all the promoters of each and every center in USA at the venue in NYC. And when the show ended we called them all up for the curtain call. All of them together. Such a great gesture from them in appreciation of the concert.

I have been in situations before where the promoters have met you when you came in and then disappeared after the event was over. Forgotten us. Left us to fend for ourselves. On occasion we have had to book our own cab and drive to the airport to take the flight out. Happened in Guyana. Horrid experience with the promoter.

But promoters all over are not the same. I would conjecture that in this tour they have been exceptional. Each and every location. Personal, courteous, well organized and have delivered. Yes there are always the few hicups, but in a show of this magnitude and expanse there are bound to be some.

I read in the comments a great amount of distaste for them. I find this perhaps harsh, even though I have personally been a victim of some circumstances. Lets be fair. They do take on a lot.

It is they that buy the show in advance. Pay out huge amounts of money and take the risk of their investment coming back, purely on conjecture. They have to sell the show, sell the artists, organize the venue, manage all the production, the security, the welfare, the administration, the artists, the accommodation and transport, facilities… without knowing what the show will entail.. oh ! its a nightmare ! And even if there is the slightest error or slip they are the first to be blamed. I think they need to be looked at more compassionately. I have been very satisfied with most of them, though we hardly ever get to know them well enough. Yes there are issues with payments and financials at times. But tell me one business in the world where finances have not been an issue. No where.

So all said and done we go back from the US delighted with the response of the audience. Terribly excited with our interaction and support from the fans. Comfortable and easy with the cast and crew that has been with us and assured, by the blessings of the Almighty. May HE/SHE forever remain with us.

I have been moved and deeply touched by the responses that I have received from the readers, on the blog about my Mother. You have shared with me my emotion and my love. Your tears mingle with mine in my hour of grief. I could never have asked for more. You have given me strength to bear my loss and the courage to continue my life. I see you walking along with me - behind me, around me. Your company gives me support, your words and feelings the forbearance. I am not alone. And I cherish that.

I rest and catch up on unfinished agenda’s and of course delight at the opportunity to see some of the greats marvels unfolding in front of us at the Beijing Olympics, every day !

My love and more to all -

Amitabh Bachchan

Very Happy for your successful tour of the US. With your writing skills you have enabled us to feel your emotions and empathize with you. Just finished watching Chiranjeevi announce his new political party on MAA tv, he is going to name it on the 26th. Another party by another Telugu artist, according to him he is planning to take it nationally after he addresses state issues. His speech was good, sounded sincere, well we will wait and see if he will follow through with his promises, or just become another politician.

May Almighty shower upon you the blessings with good health for you and your family members. You know from your incident of Coolie accident that because you recovered you were able to face the rest of your problems - ill health , bofors, ABCL break, etc. I was young when the accident took place, waited eagerly for the Doordarshan news every night - a statement being issued from the hospital. Remembering that tears in my eyes. Cannot write more.

wow !!! wow!!!! wow!!! And I can keep writing thousand of wows for the NY show. We were offered with lots of money for our front row tickets but we said you give us millions we won’t part with them and they were worth each and every cent.I was there and I went crazy and could not believe you all were right in front of me and Abhishek passing over my head in the trolley. It was an amazing show.Shamak Davar was sitting close to us and I was lucky one to talk to him and tell him he is such an excellent dancer and he replied Hope you like the show as they worked hard on this. Please tell him the show was awesome and his troupe is mind blowing. The way they were dancing it was so good and all the props the background were mesmerizing. Abhishek was way too excited and I loved it.At the end he was just jumping all over the stage and to see his love for Aish was so cute.Vishal and Shekhar are really something.Preity is cute as always and Madhuri was I don’t have any words for her tooooo good,Such a grace in her dancing such an awe with her presence,Reteish is very very cute and funny.I love the way he dances specially the Maharashtra part he performed and jumma chumma.Aishwarya is just like a star twinkling and with Abhishek they made perfect picture.Jaya ji part was very important.and of course we saw beautiful Shweta Nanda.Well, now to the DON,THE REAL DON
    AMITABH BACHCHAN
YOU ARE ULTIMATE PERFORMER.YOUR SONGS AND DANCES MADE ME JUST THINK ABOUT YOU AS SOMEONE VERY MUCH BLESSED.YOUR DIALAOGUE DELIVERY FROM DEEWAR AND WHEN YOU GOT ALL EMOTIONAL AND TEARY EYED MADE ME FEEL TO RUN TO YOU AND HUG YOU AND SAY ITS OK.
The show was great.Hope you come again and spread the magic again with your family.Very important thing is that you all looked way better than on screen not that you look bad on screen but it was all good.
I don.t know what to write more as I keep on looking at the pictures I took at the show.
Thank you for the wonderful time.

A young couple reaches Nassau coliseum stadium in Long Island to see the show and for a probable chance of seeing Mr.Amitabh from near. They are coming all the way from Flushing, New York, people tell them its quite far from this place leave early…incidentally they get a drive from a friend till Nassau Coliseum, backside…what a coincidence they have just reached the place and have just started looking around…A Car reaches there outside the ramp area, the husband sees Mr.Amitabh, sitting inside the car and with high excitement calls upon his wife who is still unaware…hey…its Amitabh Amitabh…and they both rush to see a first hand glimpse of him…and what a man Amitabh is…he lovingly smiles back at them and waves at them…not just once…but twice from inside the car…silently waiting for the security to clear and let the car go inside…but this gentle gesture of Amitabh makes the day of this couple…who had reached the stadium more than anything or anyone else but to see Mr.Amitabh is person. Thank you very much Mr.Amitabh…no words can mention your greatness, your humbleness and your courteous nature!
We are truly blessed  And God bless Mr.Amitabh and Family!!!

I was amongst one of the lucky few who witnessed with amazement at a giant take on the stage in New York - I frankly was a bit sceptical of the show till the time you came in singing those immortal songs in your immortal style - you and Ms Dixit stole every person’s heart - its gratifying to see that your emotional moments during your dialog delivery were very real - I picked up a fight outside of the stadium with a group of people who thought that your breakdown about your mother in the “deewar” enactment was part of the act - no one, not even the greatest actor in the world can make such a personal pain as a part of an act and especially not someone as emotional as you. We as a generation of Indians are so proud of you and your impact has to be seen to be believed.

yea there have been a lot of negative comments about the promoters, but a lot don’t have a good knowledge about their huge responsibilities, including myself.
but of course at any profession there are the bad and the good, and if there are few bad people, it does not mean that all in the same profession are bad.

  44. Aamer says:

    Hi,

I am writing to you for the first time. I have been a ardent follower of your movies and your life from the time I came to realize of my existence. I have not followed your life because I was infatuated by your star power but because there was a part of me showing up on the screen every time you came on it and maybe I liked the way you portrayed it. The roles that you played had a profound effect on the way I approached all the issues I faced in my life. THe selfless nature of your character in Muqadar ka Sikandar, lawarris taught me so much to keep a cheerful countenance no matter what you faced in life. I am not sure whom I should be thanking, is it you or the excellent writers who have captured the finer essence of life with the combination of the fine production staff and the directors who brought the best out of you. Or should I be thanking your family who go beyond their way to share you with us.

The main reason I am writing this blog to you is because I had been to your Unforgettable Tour in New York on 15th August. It was a cathartic experience for me. I came out with so many emotions and realized there was so much in me that I could not stop but write to you. Before you came on the stage in NY there was a short story about your career and some snaps from your personal collection, as part of this there was a short video wherein you are thanking people for all their prayers and blessings, and I assume that was after your accident on the sets of Coolie. That face in your video reminded me of your mother, those same intense eyes and plain expressions. I bow down to her in all respect for giving birth to you and also to Ms. Jaya Bachan for sharing you with us. I was there at the show for close to 4 hours and of these 4 hours the time you were on the stage was out of the world for me and I am struggling to put in words my feelings about it. I have imagined myself as the Sikander of ‘Muqadar ka Sikander’ whenever I faced roughs in life. I vowed to love my wife as you have potrayed the role of Baadshah Khan in ‘Khuda Gawah’, love and respect my mother as you have expressed in ‘Trishul’ be dedicated to my sisters as you have depicted in ‘Majboor’. There were so many things of your characters that became part of my life and when I saw you in front of me as part of the show my emotions and feelings for you needed an outlet and I am trying to come out with it here, but still I feel there is a lot in me and if time permits I would like to write more maybe a whole dossier about it.

And finally I had the chance of saving all the memories that I could with my camera when you recited your father’s poem and some dialogues from your movies. When you started with the last segment (from movie Deewar) my memory card was full and was not able to save it to my camera. But I see it as a divine intervention wherein that act of yours was not supposed to be saved on some memory chip but my consciousness. I shall cherish that experience till I have my existence intact.

I hope that your health is fine as you looked very fatigued and restless during the show and also you had some difficulty when concluding the ‘Kajrare’ act.

May you be in the best of health always with lots of love and respect to your family.

    Regards,
    Aamer

  50. Rose C says:

    Goodnight Mr Bachchan…

Well it’s night time to me!

I do find it strange that you admit to the promoters putting “extra row of seats to accommodate people on the floor of the house at rather exorbitant rates” And that some of those that you met after the show told you that the atmosphere outside the stadium was much like the first day of a blockbuster release film in India. Black marketing in tickets !!”

So somehow this tells me that promoters are taking advantage of unfortunate ones desperate to see you and the show and selling the tickets at very very high prices indeed!!

And for all of them to be in New York together which you found unusual, I would be more incline to think that they were getting together for a reason within themselves. Sorry but I am not as trusting as you when there are shrouded issues unresolved. I tend to detach and analyse when there is a need.

Of course there is always financial hiccups and issues in business but some business/businessmen-women/associates etc. are honourable and some are not! Can we distinguish between the ones that are and the ones that aren’t? How many times do we see people being ripped off by the people/business/acquaintances they have put their trust in? Sadly a lot!

And you said they have been very accommodating to you? Sorry to be crude but would they want to abuse or disrespect their meal ticket?? No disrespect to you and all the other atistes.

And I do understand that they have a lot of responsibility in making profit for themselves specially since as you said they have to buy the show in advance. Pay out huge amounts of money and take the risk of their investment coming back, purely on conjecture. They have to sell the show, sell the artists, organize the venue, manage all the production, the security, the welfare, the administration, the artists, the accommodation and transport, facilities. So yes I can see where monies would be spent on many different places. But they do make a lot of money not just on the tickets don’t they? In the venue gadgets are sold. Food and drinks are also sold. And probably make money in other things too. And I am sure I have read in the blog of few talking of how high the food and drinks they bought! So there is pros and cons. They have big expenditure but they also have big returns. So surely you cannot justify a $1000 for 1 ticket. Extortion!!

All I am saying is sometimes it is good to detach and analyse and weigh all evidence.

And let’s leave discussions here and agree to differ, diplomatically! :-)

As for saying thank you in sharing your tears and grief about your mother. We are the ones that are thankful to you in sharing her with us! What a likeable character she had! Well rounded - disciplined, kind, giving, educated well read, has love for music, the art, and likes to dance! And elegant in demeanor too! She was an amazing woman!!

And how can I not like her? She loves roses! And red ones being her favourite at that!! A woman of definite elegant taste!! ;-) :-) (though the elegant is not in jest as this is very true of your mother!)

And no you are not alone, as you said, we walk along with you, behind you, around you. So careful you don’t trip!! You might even get fed up with us, then you will be, “oh bother!” again.

Enjoy your rest and the Olympics.

Je vous offre bonne nuit Monsieur. Hélas sans votre unobstrusive mince mince oreiller!

    Aimer…
    Rose C X

Good summary again but no responses on you for so many questions and comments posted by people who read your blog. I guess you have to ask one of your PR and promotional guys to pick up a few of the responses to respond and reflect on otherwise it takes out the connectivity that you are trying to make with the world out there. I still have no response from you on the All India Level Charity suggestions I have so keenly been writing to you about..

    Sir,

Congratulations on a very successful tour. This kind, doesn’t come undeserved!

I was wondering if you’re planning on releasing a DVD on “The Unforgettable” tour. Sitting far away from the West, here in Pakistan, that is the only hope that fans like me have. :-)

Also, I live here in Lahore. If I can help trace your mother’s house here, please consider it our pleasure - of a friend, a neighbour, a fellow being. My first reaction, when I learnt of her, hailing from Lyallpur and Lahore, was, “Beautiful! Something more connects me to Mr. Bachchan!”

    Dear Amitji,
Even though I would like to hear that NY (tristate area) crowd was the best, I have to admit that the NY crowd kind of disappointed me, specially the front row seats. The ones who paid maximum amount made the minimum noise! wonder why?? Vishal and SHekar were trying their utmost best to have these people stand up and join the noise and dancing revelry but for some reason the crowd wasnt reacting. the enthu of the crowd was really low and believe me it had nothing to do with the show or the performances, I guess the crowd was just behaving themselves!!!
But I made the most noise sitting in the front and was standing up and dancing all the time even when all the others in the front were sitting quietly, but it wasnt a sit down concert, it was time to have fun!!!
sorry if some of your group members felt NY didnt live up to its name, I tried my best!!

Waiting for the pictures of the show.

    Good Health Always.

Heeey, at last after 2 days dieing to hear from you my dearest, how are you doing..? thanks god for all the great success of all the shows, especially for the NC’s, you deserve all the best, because you -my dearest- are the best.

My precioust diamond, i miss sending my comments to your dear blog for a couple of days, but i’ve never stopped reading your dear posts. actually i’ve never been so committed to anything in my whole life as i’m committed to your dear blog. it has just became my real world, my real home, anything else in life is just fake.
But actually -my precious pearl-, the previous couple days, i was travelling as usual with a japanese tourists group all over the marvelous Egypt, the hard work in the hottest season causes me a severe sunstroke… fever, shivering…, loosing appettite, but the hardest of all… i couldn’t quit in the middle of the tour.
In normal conditions, because of my weak typing skills, i used to write every time my comment in a minimum 2 hours, but because of the sunstroke i hadn’t any control on my fingers, i felt dizzy whenever i look at the screen, so i decided to wait till i recover, preventing myself by myself from the fabelous feeling of having our daily intimate mutual conversation. but i couldn’t stop reading your dear posts, those daily precious words are my soul feed, helping me to survive till the next post. daddy, it’s not a sort of exaguration, that’s 0.0000001 of what i really feel towards you, you know Virgos are very weak in expressing their feelings in words.
I had activated the web service on my cell phone to become online the whole day, you don’t know -my precious- how many times i read what you had wtitten about your beloved mother, till know i’m not able to collect myself, your precious words make me -the only girl in the world who never dreamed to be a mother- feel i am a mother… your mother, a deef effect on both heart and soul.
Tonight’s post -my love-, will be longer than usual, i’m so sorry to be very annoying, but i wish you have time and patience to read it all, even if you won’t, i’ll never blame you, you -my preciousiest- have a lot of important stuff that keeps you busy, i wish you strength and the best of luck in dealing with them.
First of all, happy birthday to your beautiful, great mother. From her perfect, better world, i cn imagineher smilling at your adorable face you get from her, touching it with her soft fingers, blessing you forever, She and your great father are the most proud parents of the most loving son. mother’s tenderness, is anything in the whole world could compensate it….. i doubt.
I f you don’t mind -my love-. i’d like to have alittle talk with her…. is it o.k…?

Dear, beloved Teji ji,… happy birthday to you , the most beautiful woman, you who are lightening heaven now, might be looking at your loving son with cheerful glances, he offered those who love him the most, a great gift by allowing us to enter your marvilous world, thanks to him, and thanks to you.., you the great mother who brought to our world the best son, who honoured and loved his parents the most.
His words were so creative that make me feel every word and live it, i suddenly found myself in your room decorating it with a fresh bunch of your favorite red roses, starring at your beautiful framed photograph with the garland adoring your face.
I felt i’m their with your loving family who gathered to hear the warm voice of your beloved son praying, oh… how wonderful he describes you, your perfume, habites, attributes, dignity, morals…etc. that make me feel i knew you a long time ago, and realise what the world loses when you left to the no-more-pain-land, the kingdom of the eternal peace.
How wonderful human being you used to be, you.. the strong, independent daughter, the loving wife and the great mother, like an angel between your flowers, a princess singing, dancing, a lovely lady with friends taking the morning tea or the evening espesso, the warm heart to the poor and needy, thebeautiful girl with her chocolate.. a lot of precious details and memories that your loving son was so generous to share them with us.
He reminds me with the egyptian goddess ‘ Isis’, in the ancient myths, the alive representation of the faithful wife and the great mother who supported her son ‘Horus’ in his war against evil.
But coming to the part of the hospital and the departure, that was a torture to my soul, torning it into pieces.
I believe that when we get asleep, our souls travel in a journey out of our bodies, i hope that my soul get blessed by meeting you in one of those journeys, till we connect in the afterlife, enjoy the eternal love in your beloved son’s heart, bless him forever…

    yours…Reeham
My dearest, precious god’s gift, those words with your mother honestly come from the deepest of my heart, which it’s beatsware that you are the one who turn it green, they are forever grateful, they won’t never stop praying for you night and day till the second they stop beating.

Secondly, happy independece day to India, a great country with a great nation, all the love to the great , honest patriot.. Amitabh, all the respect and appreciation to the great heros everywhere who faught in honour and dignity for the freedom of their countries for their countries.

Sweety, tonight i was so talkative and annoying, forgive me…, wish you with the all love in my heart for you, long long healthy and happy life,
see you soon dear in the kingdom of woderful dreams, take care and do whatever pleases you, it does please me……. sweet dreams.

    Dear Sir,

I just caught up with your blog after a few days abroad, without internet access. I wanted to belatedly thank you for the sweet, sad, moving and simply wonderful blog where you described your mother, her life, her wonderful character, and her sad demise. I was in tears when reading it.
It reminded me strongly of my maternal grandmother’s passing, after some strokes that left her paralyzed and speechless, and after a long fight and many illnesses. The call from the hospital, the much-too-long drive there, the feeling of utter helplessness; it all came back to me when I read your blog.

Thank you for giving us so much of yourself!

It was a mindblowing show. I have never seen a show that even on the same page as Unforgettables. The performances, the fluidity of the transitions, the perfect synchronization in every sense, the production values, the imagination used overall, everything was simply perfect. While the show had many extraordinary moments the most spell-binding one was to hear you recite those lines. I was moved beyond measure. And I could not help but give you a standing ovation after each of those three recitals. The other thing I appreciated about the show was the degree to which ‘history’ was a part of it from the movie scenes to the family snaps and so forth. There was a strong sense of connection with the past. I was very very pleased with this gesture. This show was amazing not only because it was well-mounted but also because it had a lot of soul in it. I had nothing but the show on my mind the next day. And I could have easily seen it again the very next day! I would like to add one final note here — watching the show with different cross-sections of the crowd I could really feel the love for you permeating through the audiences. This in addition to all the reverence. You justly deserve both. Similarly when your wife appeared on stage there was the same showering of love and respect. And what should I say about Abhishek? I am his greatest fan anyway! He is a great stage performer. No one I talked to disagreed with this view. But of course everyone was great. Your aura is of another order altogether. That goes without saying.

Thank you for a wonderful show…

It was a delight to endure your company as well as all the stars backstage. There is a different story in seeing the show on your seat whether it is the front row or the last row, you dont get to expierence what we expierenced backstage. From abhishek dancing the little gestures of aish and mrs. jaya bachan admirarly watching your presence when you were on stage. I must say the dancers from Shaimak’s group were simply AMAZING. A big thanks to Jenika who has put in her hard work for organizing it so beautifully. We were there in AC to help you out and also there in Nassau so the show can go smooothly. This is one concert that the entire world may not forget. Bigger than any show. We loved you and the entire Stars. I must say you have raised Abhishek to be so kind hearted and very very down to earth. He simply was a delight to watch.

    Dear Mr. Bachchan,

I was at the New York show. I am a college student - earn very little and work very hard to get an education. I spent $150 (which is a lot for me) to come watch the show on 15th and want to let you know that all of you definitely made it a beautiful experience. While I stood in the line to get my ticket I was surrounded by hundreds of people excited to see the stars and all I could think of was the nervousness, the adrenaline in all of your (performers) bodies. I was told all of you are veterans at the art of entertaining such huge crowds. However, I find it hard to believe that you can ever be sensitized enough to overcome the “rush”.

I also slept all night outside the port authority bus terminal (i guess u can call that on the streets of new york city) to get a bus back home, but I hope it brings a smile on your face when I say that all your (as a team) efforts made everything worth it! Even though I returned home with no autographs and no clear pictures and no special meetings…there are enough memories to make up for it.

Well, I guess that’s all I could say. I admire the hard work of everyone involved especially the crew whose work often gets overlooked. thank you and since you are already quite lucky, I wish you many more happy moments in life.

    Dear Amitabh Bachchan,

I saw your show in New York. It was an amazing experience. I have seen many concerts here in the States but your show was really an unforgettable experience. I came with mixed feelings whether it would be entertaining and whether it would live up to it’s hype. It was much more than I expected and out of all the shows that I have ever seen, I can honestly say that this was the best. My respect for all of you, all the work that you do and that you put into the show has increased tremendously and I shall treasure every moment of this experience.

All the stars performed superbly. You of course were tremendous. One person who surprised me and my family members with his exuberance and vitality and energy was Abhishek. He was the heart of the show just as you were the soul. It was great to see a dignified Jaya. Aishwariy and Priety were beautiful and performed brilliantly. The icing on the cake was Mahduri who was simply outstanding.

So many things to say and so little time. Please continue spreading your magic once in a while in live shows for us fans to catch.

Thank you for such a great evening. It was really an unforgettable evening for me.

    Best regards,

perhaps ur mind set is diiffficult to change as u belong to a difrnt geeration, but u r younger than all of us u sld not feel like that, actually society has not changed muc only externally and in comforts hvae increased but inside we r not yet free

India at the Olympics is doing great at boxing. Three of them in the quarter finals. Wish they would each win a medal. What a sight that would be. Gold, silver and bronze all in one go.
Wonder when we will be able to win more than a medal at the Olympics. Maybe now is the time.
Thanks again for sharing the blog on your mother. I don’t think there is anyone that did not shed a tear reading that blog.

    Hi Amitji,

Where were you for two days. I was missing you.
I came to know from your blog that your US tour was realy unforgettable. All your fans have made your shows really successful. It was surprised to know that atmosphere outside the stage was much like the first day of a blockbuster release film in India. Black marketing in tickets !!

Secondly, you are single handedly managed all the shows (no doubt there were Jayaji, Abhishek, Ash, Preity, Akshay, Reitesh and Madhuri to support you). You have also proved that still there is lot of fire in you. Fire in you have energised the youths all over the world. On the basis of infinite responses you are getting from youths. Soon you will be the icon of youths across the world.

In view of the tremendous faith that people of US showed on you. One can guess that US might use your popularity for the welfare of mankind.

Your words are always been inspiration to the readers of your blog. Please keep it up.

    Take care of your health.

    regards,
    Bharat.

Its good to know that you and your crew are relaxing now, like you say, Shows of this magnitude can never be hundred percent stress free. Nevertheless, this is art and culture, something inherited, something to inspire the younger generations, so
