The dictionary meaning of procrastination is to postpone doing something.
All of us, with the exception of a few, are addicted to some degree of procrastination.
I remember the time when mom would wake us up for school and we would go, “just five more minutes please”, and trust me those five minutes of sleep were more fulfilling than the entire night of sleep. I would tell mom to wake me up on the Sunday as well, so that I could go right back to sleep. Till date the biggest grouse mom has against me is,“ You do everything, but always do it at the last minute”. My hubby still doesn’t get up till his alarm has rung four times at least. Whenever I remind him to do something, he says “kar loonga”,( I’ll do it), so much so that I tell him that, “kar loonga”, is his midddle name.
I guess it starts from there on. If anyone calls you, you do not go immediately, instead you go, “one sec”, or “gimme a minute”. I see procrastination in all walks of life.
We all know that certain things have to be done, yet we keep postponing it till we can’t any more. Is it the thrill of doing things the last minute and the pleasure and confidence that you derive thereafter for accomplishing it, or is it just force of habit. Irrespective of what prompts us to procrastinate, we just do postpone things.
The only people, I can think of, who probably do not have the luxury of this habit are probably the doctors, who can’t possibly say we’ll save a life a wee bit later, or the daily laborers who have to earn their bread for the day for their families ( I am sure I am missing quite a few here). Though I am sure given a chance they would too.
Just one thing though, procrastinate anything, just do not postpone life. Live it to the fullest today, for tomorrow may have another story to tell !!

The last line said it all. Yes you’re so absolutely right about not postponing life. Nice to have you back into blogging. I have blogged a bit myself. You may find one or two of them worth a read.
Thanx Mihir ji ..for your inspiring words.

vERY LUCID WRITE UP. tHE IDEA BEHIND THE TERM PROCRASTINATION IS WELL BROUGHT OUT. IT’S A GRAVE ISSUE, THAT IS, TO MAKE PEOPLE REALIZE THAT EVEN SMALL DELAYS IN OUR DAILY CHORES REFLECT THIS NASTY HABIT.
[ REPORT ABUSE ]Please allow me to appreciate you for posting an interesting topic. A matter of concern for all…indeed. It’s human nature but very few of us dare to admit our shortcomings or mistakes…whatever you can say. We keep doing the things in a specific manner and this habit one time is developed into our nature and then it becomes pretty difficult to make any alteration.

You are right about professional life of doctor. this professional life makes them postpone their family programmes. At home they do it more frequently due to professional pressures. this is why i think my daughter did not opt medicine.
[ REPORT ABUSE ]Superb and simple narration, just to the point.
In terms of evolution theory, it is said that among the primates laziness aka procastination is inbuilt. They just eat and relax.
Of course, the idea is not to blame evolution
Procastination needs to be tamed.
Thanks
[ REPORT ABUSE ]Yes I am also from this family. I keep things to the last minute if I get an assignment say a dead line of two days I will begin my work only on the 46th hour. but I was always successful in that maybe because I communicate to God through my prayers very closely…
[ REPORT ABUSE ]Hi!!
[ REPORT ABUSE ]What you have written is so true for most people I have met in life .But for me,…..If I have to do anything it has to be done immediately. My dear husband used to get really bugged with my habit sometimes and always gave it a negative shade saying that I am a hypered person(one of a kind).Well what do you say to that??
nice article. There are also people who have no time to say “one minute please”. They work round the clock like machines. Even one minute can miss their bus/train.They dont have time to talk with others. Some times quick action/decision give negative results also.
[ REPORT ABUSE ]Hmmm… may be I’ll post a comment a little later…
Hahahah! Good one, enjoyed reading it
[ REPORT ABUSE ]When I look back at my spent life of several decades, i now realise how important this word ” PROCRASTINATION ” meant in my life. I wish someone had impressed upon me its importance so that I would not have missed so many opportunities in life for which I repent today. Well it is never too late.
[ REPORT ABUSE ]please i like your idea and face please select me in your friends list i used first time bigadd i like your face
[ REPORT ABUSE ]yes procrastination is bad.in fact it is the worst enemy of man.
[ REPORT ABUSE ]Thanks for all your comments and thoughts
[ REPORT ABUSE ]This is the human nature, where we enjoy taking liberty of delaying things. Kabeer Das has said in his one of famous doha “‘Kaal Kare so aaj kar , aaj kare so ab, pal me pralay aayega, bahuri karega kab”.But still we are enjoying in dragging things, there should be a priority setting of the job, like most urgent, urgent and normal. And we should not wait the normal things to become very urgent. This also gives us a relaxed working habit, if do things at right time.Very nicely written article. Much appreciated.
[ REPORT ABUSE ]inseparable thing from a person’s life..every now and then he uses “wait for a second yaar..!”bt unknowingly develops a habit of PROCRASTINATION..very well brought topic must say….. to the point..
